About this listen

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be positive all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Manson makes the argument, backed by both academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited - "not everybody can be extraordinary; there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault". Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.

There are only so many things we can give a f*ck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

There are a couple of good points in this book and it is funny sometimes, but there is nothing new and I got bored by the end.

Just ok

This book is generally pretty engaging and I like Manson's casual writing style. However, it's pretty obvious that he doesn't have any specialist knowledge re anything he's writing about. It's a bit like having a casual chat with a non-expert, it's fun but you won't really learn much from it. This becomes especially obvious when he discusses psychology and refers to published studies at points - he's not a psychologist and this becomes very clear, very quickly!

Overrated and lacks substance

This book really grabbed my attention. It's a must read book if you are looking to get your head around life's true priorities and values. The lessons I will take from this book will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Inspiring and insightful

When I read the title I thought this was going to be a very different experience. I thought it was going to be an anecdotal, no-holds-barred critique on modern culture. In some ways it is, but after the first chapter it became clear that this was a self help book. I almost stopped listening, but something about it kept me curious.
The constant swearing that decorated the anecdotes adds a kind of bravado which makes seem more sincere. That probably says more about me than the book, but I was able to keep listening because of it and at the end of it I can honestly say that I enjoyed it.

Self help made palatable by the use of bad language

This is one of those books you need to listen to twice. once to enjoy the story and the second to learn the lessons.

listen twice

An easy-to-digest guide which outlines principles by which we should live to improve general wellbeing, great for someone looking for an introduction into living an examined life.

The writing has a crude quality, the narrative is self-indulgent and at times contradictory. However, being such a short listen and funny on occasion, it is worth a go.

A decent introduction into living an examined life

Really enjoyed this book and the insight it offers. Unfortunately it seems it’s not quite as simple as just ‘not giving a f***’! The only thing it is let down by is the annoying, high pitched voices the narrator puts on for female voices. It is really unnecessary and makes it sound very condescending towards women.

Enjoyable but annoying voices
