About this listen

"For many days we had been tempest-tossed...the raging storm increased in fury until on the seventh day all hope was lost." So begins this delightful adventure story. The Robinson family, a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, will emerge alive from this terrible storm, bringing to land two dogs and a shipload of livestock: hens, pigeons, and geese.

Inspired by Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, this uplifting tale relates a family's ingenuity and courage as they struggle to survive on an exotic tropical island.

Quite entertaining of an Old Favourite

An excellent listen. Very much enjoyed this audio version of a favourite classic. The narrator has a pleasant British voice, but doesn’t work that hard to distinguish between characters’ voices. However, as it’s written in first person there is little confusion.

A great story

I initially downloaded the story to fall asleep to, but I really got into the story and enjoyed it a lot.

Unfortunately, ruined by narration!

Not suited to everyone, you have to bear in mind the era in which it was written, 1812 in Switzerland; so the knowledge of the narrator seems unlikely and unrealistic in a modern context. Just consider that the main character, as it were, was expecting to emigrate to an island colony, and well, it was commonly accepted at the time for far greater knowledge of other cultures and fauna/flora, somewhat ironic, given they were generally less accepted.! Another problem. With this addition is the narrator, who reads it, perhaps as it was designed as a journal, but nevertheless, not in an interactive way to most readers./Listeners.. He leaves pauses at where they are not necessary, and seems to be simply reading the text with no understanding of its meaning. Or perhaps a unique understanding of his own, never the less ruined the text for me.. There are far better versions on Audible all the Internet, unfortunately for me I read this version nine times before I realised and so now any narrator sounds course and simply wrong to me as I have grown used to this version.. I recommend other versions on Audible, but the book itself is interesting and engaging, though, perhaps not what people expect! Worth a try at least

Excellent old time adventure

Told in the old language. Epic for its time. I felt like I was watching an old black and white movie

The calmest shipwreck ever.

I like this however they all seem to chill to be shipwrecked. No one panic, and there really wasn’t any hardship. Didn’t feel very human to me.

The colourful description of the ingenuity.

I liked it all apart from the descriptions of killing the lions and the whales.

It's a wonderful book

This book has always been a favorite of mine since school, and just listening to it again makes me wonder how I would have done if I were ship wrecked.
I would recommend this title to everyone.

The story was exciting having read it as a child I do love a happy ending though so this is a winner!

I disliked the amount of animal slaughter but it was relevant to the story so acceptable

Classic story, but too many dead animals

If you enjoy listening to repeated descriptions of the many ways that one family can kill a wide variety of animals, this is your book. The narrator , though skilled, is not suitable for this day and age anymore, in my opinion. Too much "old chums" from the imperial days for me, but perhaps just perfect to portray the father of the family.
