Summary

Adam Roberts turns his attention to answering the Fermi paradox with a taut and claustrophobic tale that echoes John Carpenter's The Thing.

Two men while away the days in an Antarctic research station. Tensions between them build as they argue over a love letter one of them has received. One is practical and open. The other surly, superior and obsessed with reading one book - by the philosopher Kant.

As a storm brews and they lose contact with the outside world, they debate Kant, reality and the emptiness of the universe. The come to hate each other, and they learn that they are not alone.

Amazing story, original and doesn't patronise

This for me was a quality listen. I've studied philosophy so thoroughly enjoyed the explanations of Kants metaphysics and how government agencies and high tech companies are linking the ideas with AI. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters too and just the old fashioned fast paced adventure of the chases and surprises. Highly recommended and more please.

A good human story bogged down in a metaphysical mosh pit

The performance of the narrator is excellent. The narrative story is good. Character development and the interplay between the main protagonists is good interjected with humour. The metaphysical sections at times are Mumbo jumbo and really quite painful. The end required subtitles to decipher. I enjoyed it, the story is thought provoking however during the metaphysical sections I just wanted it all to end.

scifi philosophy wrapped in a suspense thriller

Wonderfully written story and a near perfect adaption as an audiobook. Highly recommended for fans of both science fiction and Immanuel Kant.
