About this listen

1871. When Fergus Deagan's wife dies in childbirth, she makes him promise to take their family to Western Australia to join his brother Bram, also to marry again. She's right. His young sons and newborn daughter do need a mother's love, and he needs something different.

Disowned by her father for becoming pregnant, Cara Payton bears a stillborn baby. She's in deep despair until a plea to wet-nurse a motherless baby gives her life new purpose. When Fergus proposes marriage, she accepts. She respects him and is happy to stay with the baby she now loves.

During the voyage to Australia, she and Fergus draw closer. Then her past rears its ugly head and they face a terrible crisis. When they finally get to Fremantle, Fergus and Bram, always rivals, struggle to make friends. To make matters worse, Bram has financial problems, and there is no railway where Fergus can find engineering work. Can the two brothers solve their problems? Will the newcomers find a way to build a new life?

Truly wonderful

I have enjoyed every single book in The Traders series. I was slightly concerned about the change in narrator for the final installment but the narration was superb. I cannot reccomend these books enough.

Disappointed

I didn’t enjoy listening to the male speaker as much as I had listening to the other books with the female.

fantastic story

Read this series about a year ago and have just read it again enjoyed it as much as the first time. Sometime in the future I may read it again. A super story, best to start with book one The Traders Wife.

Loved the series!

This final book tied up the loose ends and left everything neat and tidy, but lacked the adventurous storyline of the others in the series. Pleasant enough, but a bit flat.

Weakens to the five book Saabs

I found this book a little boring rather like a curates egg a good building start to the story a. Solid but lack lustre middle and a weak predictable ending. The end was a big let down.
I chose the book as it’s the final book five of the saga.
Only read it if like me you wanted to see the saga end.

Struggling

I had enjoyed the series but I’m struggling to finish - same olde , same olde , rape, marries to preserve honour , travels to Auss, class wars on ship, cad on ship… feel like I’ve read it before .
I actually liked the male reader .

Disappointed

I could not get used to the narraters voice. I found it very harsh. I am struggling to finish the audio book and I am reverting to a written copy. The story as always is brilliant.

Another winner for Anna Jacobs

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series. Anna never disappoints her readers.

Disappointing

I love Anna Jacobs books but this one was spoilt by the Narrator and a predictable storyline. I have listened to the previous books in the series and really enjoyed them. In this book I found the narrator hard to listen to as it was difficult to tell who was who as the characters sounded so much alike. The story was predictable for the most part so I almost returned the book but kept going in the hope it would improve. It did not. Sorry Anna Jacobs but this was not one of your better books.
