Summary

This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Two Towers, the second part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin – alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

From his time as the ranger Strider to his ascension to King of Gondor, this guide has everything you need to know about the hero Aragorn. Perhaps one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn is known by many names: Strider, Elessar, Estel, and finally Aragorn II, heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor. From a shadowy tracker who mysteriously comes to Frodo's aid to an essential member of the Fellowship of the Ring to the long-awaited king who restores harmony and peace to Middle-earth, Aragorn plays many important roles in the fantasy epic. And he has quite an interesting history.

Andy Serkis is a threat to Steven Fry

I am sure you all know enough about these stories to have interest in listening, or not!
Andy Serkis’ reading of these tales is simply perfect! Only Steven Fry could challenge the variety and depth of vocalisations and characterisations here in, and while I delight in Mr Fry’s tonal dealings with Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter, I suspect Andy Serkis cannot be outclassed in this wonderful

A step up from Fellowship

Book 17/21 for 2021

Unlike the films, where I think Fellowship is my favourite, I found Two Towers the book to be a big improvement on the Fellowship book. For one, it feels like there is almost always momentum in the story unlike the meandering of the latter chapters of Book 1 in Fellowship.

There are still the usual Tolkein flairs, both for good and for ill - long descriptive scenes of geography and history and lore, but very interesting dialogue, or at least - a feeling of each word having meaning and purpose, I always marvel at how Tolkein considers so many facets.

Even some of the dry language is improved, while I still find the geographic talk a bit dull, I found myself more engaged than before on the historical beats. Maybe the longer exposure has gotten me more engaged?

Andy Serkis narration feels like it has taken a few paces forward too, this could be down to the writing but I felt each character more naturally distinguished themselves, it has less of that Children's Book narration from the Hobbit and parts of Fellowship, which was absolutely perfect for the The Hobbit, but I felt wasn't as suited to Fellowship.

Overall, I'd recommend Two Towers, it's turned me around on Tolkein after I felt a bit disappointed in parts of Fellowship, I don't know if 5 Stars is the Tolkein effect working on me, of if it should be closer to 4, either way, I don't regret reading it finally!

Andy Serkis is *the* best story teller!

Andy Serkis not only reads the book, but truly brings the story to life. His rendition of the descriptive landscapes and multiple battles will have you cry out in excitement and anguish in equal measure.

Fantastic

I really enjoyed this audio production. I’m a big fan of the films and listened to Fellowship with the older narration and the Hobbit read by Andy Serkis.

The Hobbit is amazing. Both Fellowship and Two Towers start at a fairly slow pace and build to very exciting ends.

Serkis does a tremendous job with the narration, I can’t praise him enough. The range of voices is simply outstanding. I’d love to get a message of thanks to him, I enjoyed it that much.

I understand the criticism of how loud the orcs get because when I tried to play the Hobbit to my husband and daughter in the car, my husband kept turning down the volume on the orcs and then you couldn’t hear the whispering voices. Listening on my own it didn’t bother me at all.

The Return of the King here I come!
