About this listen

The powerful timeslip novel from the worldwide bestselling author of Lady of Hay

When Jess is attacked by someone she once trusted, she flees to her sister’s house in the Welsh borders to recuperate. There, she is disturbed by the cries of a mysterious child.

Two thousand years before, the same valley is the site of a great battle between Caratacus, king of the Brtitish tribes, and the invading Romans. The proud king is captured and taken as a prisoner to Rome with his wife and daughter, the princess Eigon.

Jess is inexorably drawn to investigate Eigon’s story, and as the Welsh cottage is no longer a peaceful sanctuary she decides to visit Rome. There lie the connections that will reveal Eigon’s astonishing life – and which threaten to reawaken Jess’s own tormentor…

Barbara Erskine’s ability to weave together the past and the present makes this a tremendous novel of Roman and Celtic history, passion and intrigue.

I love all the books but especially about Rome and romans, I can't say I've been listened /read, looking foward to more.

Great as usual

I find Jess so annoying I just want to slap her face and tell her to pull herself together. But, that is some seriously amazing writing as always, from Barbara Erskine.
It's frustrating but gripping. The narrator is absolutely fantastic!

Very annoying

An exciting tale of good verses evil across two thousand years of history. Well researched and thought-out. A gripping tale.

Excellent. Couldn't put it down.

The only thing that frustrated me was Jess didn't have much back bone at times, cried out for help then repeatedly ignored their advice. Story line as always is fantastic and I've been a life long fan of Barbara's from her first book. Her research of the places and real characters is amazing but she winds her own threads through the story to make it such an enjoyable book that I really couldn't put it down.

The time lines slip: loved them.

Love everything about this book except for how Jess was portrayed with such a lack of awareness, backbone and common sense. Massive appreciation for the effort and research that goes into a book like this, especially with the dual timeframe which I absolutely love and enjoy but I guess my personality cannot tolerate a character like Jess and I found her frustrating. I hope there are still some books of Barbara’s still left for me to read as I do thoroughly enjoy them on the whole

Another gem

I found this very difficult to read as the recording kept jumping backwards and forward. I spent a lot of time back tracking.
