Summary
When Tilly Thompson, a girl from the canal, is caught stealing a pie from the terrace of The Imperial Hotel, Athelstone, the intervention of Captain Charles Thackery saves her from prison. Tilly soon finds out the real reason for the rescue. With the captain, Tilly sees life away from the poverty and hardships of the waterways, but his favor stirs up jealousy and hatred among the hotel staff, especially Freddie, the stable boy who harbors desires of his own. Freddie's pursuit leads Tilly into far greater danger than she could ever have imagined. Can she escape the prejudice, persecution and hypocrisy of Victorian Society, leave her past behind and find true happiness? This is a story of love and loss, lust and passion, injustice and ultimate redemption.

Perception
This is one of those stories that keeps you turning the page. It also in a way points to put or pre- conceived ideas of people . We go by other people's ideas without
any thought of getting to know people. Kept me wanting to keep turning the page.

Engaging and heartwarming historical romance
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to The Water Gypsy; historical romance is one of my favourite genres and I'm very pleased to have discovered this author and and narrator - I will be definitely be looking for more work by both.
The plot runs along smoothly and never really loses pace, gathering momentum to a very satisfying ending. The main characters are rich and round with Tilly the heroine having an engaging mix of fiesty and yet innocent and the protagonists leave you deeply concerned for her.
Kay writes confidently for this era and sweeps you away to a different time of hardship and opulence running side by side. Kristina brings Kay's characters to life - her range of vocals and her ability to portray the men as well as the women leave you in no doubt who's speaking and what they are feeling. I got quite lost in the story and listened to it in 2 afternoons!

A good story brought to life by a great narrator!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Water Gypsy to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version so cannot comment
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Water Gypsy?
I enjoyed the in depth descriptions of Victorian society, the historical details, and the ups and downs of Tilly's fortunes. I really empathised with Tilly, and cared very much for her ultimate triumph over adversity. The characters were richly diverse and the plot drew you in from start to finish.
What about Kristina Hale’s performance did you like?
I thought Kristina really brought this story to life, which is no mean feat. She managed to allude to each character's personality traits and individuality through her fantastic range of accents, and brought each and every character in the story off the page so I could almost visualise them within the story. She has a natural voice for narration, so there was nothing jarring or contrived about it, which I do find an issue with some narrators of audiobooks. She gave a perfect performance, by using her vocal range to depict characters and drama, by establishing a good pace so the story was easy to follow, and by having a lovely natural resonance and tone to her voice which made me want to keep listening.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have listened to it one sitting if I could!
Any additional comments?
This is not the usual type of fiction I would read, but I really enjoyed discovering a different genre.
