Twenty years ago Charlie Deravin's mother went missing near the family beach shack—believed murdered; body never found. His father has lived under a cloud of suspicion ever since.

Now Charlie's back living in the shack in Menlo Beach, on disciplinary leave from his job with the police sex-crimes unit, and permanent leave from his marriage. After two decades worrying away at the mystery of his mother's disappearance, he's run out of leads.

Then the skeletal remains of two people are found in the excavation of a new building site—and the past comes crashing in on Charlie.

Another great Gary Disher novel

I was introduced to Gary Disher through the wonderful Paul Hirschausen books, this is of the same high standard, with excellent characters and plot. In addition, Henry Nixon’s narration is pitch perfect. Highly recommended for any fans of Aussie noir.

Keeps you guessing all the way through….

I thought the story line was clever and the descriptive language added greatly to my being able to picture what was going on. The story line seemed to bump up and down and I felt that it was slow in places. I wondered why the author spun it out seemingly endlessly but all the time he was drawing in more and more threads. I did enjoy this author very much and will look at his other books.
I did not think that the narrator brought out the best of the story and would avoid anything else he narrates in the future. Sorry but his voice seemed monotonous a lot of the time.

The Way It Is Now

Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
After having listened to some Chris Hammer thought I would try this well known author. Excellent narration.

ended abruptly

I enjoyed the book, however it just wasn't well ended. it just ends. I want it wrapped up, detail, not just an explanation of what happened. I want a bit of aftermath, the day after, the police, the brother, the dad. I'm trying to be constructive. I was invested for over 95 per cent and then it is the climax with no satisfaction after feeling. Creating characters that are believable, vibrant. I want more about them, after being invested, finding out e.g. police family town, him ... but nothing. I know he's a famous writer but did his editor think this was ok? Maybe it's just about getting more books out there, I want it to be careful for the craft.
