This is the first time that I’ve listened to a book with both a male narrator and a female one. It worked really well!! And both narrators were very good! - the book and plot were interesting too and I would definitely recommend :-)

Excellent story - I did guess bits of it, but that in no way affected my enjoyment of it. Strong characters and excellent narration, even if the female voice was a little nasal. Thoroughly recommend and immediately looking to see if there are more!

My first novel from this collaboration of one of my favourite crime writers and his anaesthetist wife. Cleverly constructed around both their spheres of expertise, this book combines all the ingredients of the couple with well researched historical setting and language. I really enjoyed the romp through parts of Edinburgh I know well and will continue with the series!

A slow start, but I’m glad I stuck with it. A different tale for me, but intriguing, atmospheric and characterful. Excellent narration from both readers. I look forward to continuing with this series.

Medicine in the19th Century was somewhat trial and error and especially surrounding child birth and its complications. We have the unexplained death of a prostitute who had become the friend of a young aspiring doctor just starting out on an apprenticeship with a renowned doctor. More deaths occur and the apprentice and a housemaid work together to find the culprit who is making money from desperate pregnant young women, I found the story slow to get going, but I enjoyed it the more I got into the story. The two main character are likeable and believable in their upstairs downstairs relationship. I usually read books set in present day and this book was a pleasant change. I wouldn’t highly recommend but if you are looking for a change then worth a read.

A 19th Century Murder Mystery

I understand why this was available for free. What I don't understand are the good ratings. This book gets completely lost in the extremely gory medical details of childbirth in Victorian times. If you are interested in the more gruesome aspects of the history of "midwifery", go ahead. But if you are looking to listen to something "gripping" (as was promised) or are trying to keep your lunch inside you while listening, choose something else. If you are a hardened crime or horror reader who doesn't flinch from a bit of gore, you'll still be disappointed because at least for the first half (that's how far as I got before having to stop) NOTHING HAPPENS apart from old-school medicine being applied to the hapless poor of Victorian Edinburgh, and with little success. Oh yeah and the housemaid aspires to more in her life, someone got murdered and the main character gets beaten up but he is doing precious little to do anything about it. There is nothing gripping" about this book at all.

I enjoyed the story that I did listen too. Unfortunately I just couldn't get on with the female narrators voice. she was very good, just had a tone that bothered me too much to continue
