Summary

The New York Times best-selling author of Promise Not to Tell returns with a simmering literary thriller about ghostly secrets, dark choices, and the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters...sometimes too unbreakable.

West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter, Gertie. Now, in present day, 19-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister, Fawn. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that suddenly proves perilous when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished without a trace. Searching for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked deeper into the mystery of Sara's fate, she discovers that she's not the only person who's desperately looking for someone that they've lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

Critic reviews

"Jennifer McMahon is a writer of exceptional talent, and The Winter People is a hypnotic, gripping, and deeply moving thriller. With her beautifully drawn characters and complex, layered, and suspenseful story, McMahon has woven a dream from which I didn't want to wake - and couldn't have even if I wanted to." (Lisa Unger, author of In the Blood)
"In an edge-of-your-seat scary ghost story, Jennifer McMahon’s The Winter People yanks you from one page to the next by expertly weaving the past and present. I will never look at the woods behind my home in the same way again!" (Heather Gudenkauf, author of The Weight of Silence )

Atmospheric and creepy story.

A great story, well narrated. A tale that slowly and effectively ramps up the tension until you know it all.

The only minor negative is that I want to know more - what happened with the sleeper and the information that wasn't destroyed?!

I loved it!

I loved this story and the narration was really easy to listen to and fit really well with the story and characters. I feel like listening to the story through Audible gave the characters more depth and the story more atmospheric. It has me gripped and listening more and more each day. I wish the story would go on!

irritating

I initially couldn't get into this at all because the narrator was so annoying, Every time she said "girl" I was filled with rage, every word is drawn out in a mock feminine sing songy voice it's just so much it takes away from the actual text. I am confused how this book is so loved by people, I'd say I enjoyed it up to 2/3 of the way in and then it's like the author just crammed an ending together from bits of loose threads she couldn't tie together. Characters I didn't feel any sort of affection for because everyone of their thoughts and feelings are cliche and just superficial. it's a shame though because the actual story is great the premise and idea of it is fantastic.

Very atmospheric and creepy. I had to turn the light on listening in bed

I absolutely loved this book! Great storytelling unfolding. Reminiscent of old fairy tales and folklore. I could imagine being in the woods and the old farm. It was really creepy too. Unnerving. Will read more from this author.

Incredible

Haunting, Fascinating and so much more than I had anticipated. There is a fantasy element but it leans to more of a thriller / horror.

l am so glad l decided to consume this book by audio because the narration really added to the depth of the characters and honestly made it more spooky than it would have been if I'd have physically read it.

I can recommend this book to anyone!

The best book I've consumed for a long time.

it had great promise but ....

the story started really well and then it just got too silly. There were parts of the story that she could have developed more as the plot itself was mostly quite good. I didn't really like any of the characters, I think there was room to develop them too.

it didn't help that the narrator irritated me. I think she was trying to sound creepy but instead it sounded like she was too sleepy.

overall I did enjoy it....it's a good beach book but not for someone who wants to read fine literature

My new favourite horror author

This was my first Jennifer McMahon book and it was an instant favourite. She not only captures the more instinctive aspects of horror - the spooky sense-driven goosebumpy atmosphere- but the story taps into very primal ideas of right and wrong. And by that I mean, I felt the injustices and rooted for them to be righted like they had been done to me.

I cared about what happened to every single character. In some books that have two timelines I find myself skimming through one to get to the other, but somehow this had me gripped for every single moment.

The narrator was utterly brilliant. She fit the voices seamlessly and was very pleasant to listen to.

I have since listened to every one of the books of hers I could find on Audible. Sadly they’re not all there, but I await more.
