‘Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.
As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause.
The Women was a Sunday Times bestseller from 17.2.24-13.4.24

Wonderful book - very informative
Loved this story - Vietnam war was such a part of life in end of 60s & 70s . I spent the Summer traveling around America in 1970 & met veterans & draft dodgers & angry young people who were opposed to the war . The war never made any sense & it is sad that the veterans received such hostile treatment for doing their duty . Book tells the story so well.
Just for info - McGrath is an Irish name pronounced McGra. Th is silent .

Unknown experience.
Wow. Every young woman and every young man, every old man and every old woman should read this book. Vietnam is fast becoming a forgotten war and few look at any war and post war experiences of woman. This book opened my eyes and I had a sob of emotion as the last lines were read.

Powerful
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, Frankie was a great character we really felt her go from a determined young and naive girl into a woman. Life was brutal for military personnel during the Vietnam war. They had to deal with the horror on the frontline but so much hate from their own citizens.
This book really got the balance right

I was grabbed by this book immediately. It is narrated beautifully. I know so little about this war. Will definitely be doing more research into it. I am a fan of this author - I like how historical events are woven in her novels. Definitely would recommend.

Lambs to the slaughter.
My heartfelt gratitude, Kristin Hannah, for investing your time and talent in crafting this remarkable book. It has opened my eyes to the harsh realities of the Vietnam War, a conflict I had little knowledge of. Your work has shed light on the senselessness of war, where countless young lives are lost in futile arguments.
The narrative of Frankie's personal war was a poignant journey that left a deep impression. Each page turned was a step closer to understanding her pain and the circumstances that were beyond her control. I found myself yearning to comfort her, to reassure her of her struggle.
The chapter depicting Frankie's return home was a chilling revelation that will stay with me for a long time. This book has left an indelible mark on my understanding of war and its aftermath, and I believe it will do the same for others who read it.
A masterpiece. Ms Hannah, take a bow.

Incredible moving story
I couldn’t stop listening, this was an informative, emotional and compelling story. The descriptions of Frankie’s time in Vietnam felt very realistic and conveyed the tragedy and enormity of the war. The story of the post war experiences were also devastating. I thought the author dealt with the issues sensitively and in a balanced way. You should definitely listen to this audiobook.

Powerful Evocative
For those of an age to have lived during the Vietnamese War this is a must read .
I found the music references particularly powerful.
It is a both a wonderful and dreadful story which brings to light the utter strength of women and the importance of friendship , especially to women in difficult circumstances… as true today as it was then .
