About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Mathew Baynton, known for his roles in Vanity Fair, Horrible Histories, Gavin and Stacey and Ghosts.

Nils Holgersson is a naughty boy who tortures animals and never listens to his parents - until one day he wakes up as an elf. Deeply puzzled by his new status, he climbs on a gander's back and flies away with him, joining a flock of wild geese. As he is carried around Sweden, Nils learns everything about birds, animals, his country and good behaviour. Incredibly charming and poignant, The Wonderful Adventure of Nils Holgersson is a timeless classic loved by generations of children around the world.

Critic reviews

"The book is grand, beautiful, exciting and poignant ... It is full of poetical phrasing...yet allows for the naughty spirit of childhood to remain true." (Guardian)

Wonderful... up to a point

Since this is not mentioned anywhere and for the benefit of anyone who's wondering, this is ONLY the first the first volume of The Adventures and doesn't continue with the second "Further Adventures" volume. I wish I had known this in advance. It's also a pity because the translation is excellent and Baynton is the perfect narrator for this story.

Where is Nils today...

What a lovely narration of an inspiring never ending story...we both wonder what Nils is doing today and are sure he is looking down upon us now...

A classic for good reason

Beautiful, simple and wise.
What great knowledge, insight and skill in storytelling.
I have enjoyed it even more now in my fourties.
