About this listen
The never-before-seen history of Westeros and the lands beyond. With hundreds of pages of all-new material from George R.R. Martin.
If the past is prologue, then George R.R. Martin’s masterwork—the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time—warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE.
George R.R. Martin, in collaboration with Elio M. García, Jr. and Linda Antonsson, has written a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, featuring the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead up to the events in the bestselling A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Collected within this volume is the accumulated knowledge, scholarly speculation, and inherited folk tales of maesters and septons, maegi and singers, family trees for the Houses Stark, Lannister and Targaryen, and in-depth explanations of the history and culture of Westeros.
This is the definitive companion volume to George R.R. Martin’s dazzlingly conceived universe; THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE is indeed proof that the pen is mightier than a storm of swords.

‘Of those who work in the grand epic fantasy tradition, George R.R. Martin is by far the best’
Time Magazine
‘Colossal, staggering… Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world … one of the greats of fantasy literature’
SFX
‘The sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads … Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias’

Good
I enjoyed this - particularly how it linked in with 'A knight of the seven kingdoms' which I read first - good to hear what becomes of Egg and Dunk (I won't leave any spoilers).
Yes it's long. It's a history book, not a novel, so you shouldn't be expecting dialogue or thoughts. You get a lot of info to fill in from the books, so it's good.
I've never minded Roy Dotrice's narration, a lot of people hate on it on these reviews, i think he does just fine.

Not really a story
Not really a story, but still good to listen to, written from the perspective of historian during the reign of King Robert it goes into the lore and history of the westoros and the fantasy world it inhabits. If you love the series and want to get into the history and lore of the G RR Martin's world, ths book is for you.

Interesting but curious format
I enjoyed this, as I am a sucker for any sort of world-building literature, but I was mildly distracted by the use of multiple narrators without identifying which maester's the records or works were associated with which voice.

Fantastic World
One of the best world's I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's up there with The Silmarilion but is different enough and fascinating. Highly recommend this.

Only If you are song of Fire and Ice fan
Would you listen to The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones again? Why?
I may need to lesson this again as it can overwhelm you with Mr Martin's style of writing so it can be easy to miss gold between the filler lines which half recession why I love his work.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones?
I had hoped to find out more about the doom or even what really happened yet sadly this dose not happen however you do find out more than you hoped about the wars before and after that for me was the best part.
What about Roy Dotrice and Nicholas Guy Smith ’s performance did you like?
they are consistent which is the most you can ask for and they do bring what could be rather boring to life.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The longest nine hours of your life.
Any additional comments?
This is a great book if your already a fan this is a must I do understand that this isn't for everyone and it is only the nerdy fans like myself that will really enjoy this.
