About this listen

The Sunday Times bestseller following the inspiring story of life as a shepherdess, by the star of More4's Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive & the Kids and Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm.

Amanda Owen has been seen by millions on ITV's The Dales and Channel 5's Our Yorkshire Farm, living a life that has almost gone in today's modern world, a life ruled by the seasons and her animals. She is a farmer's wife and shepherdess, living alongside her husband Clive and seven children at Ravenseat, a 2000 acre sheep hill farm at the head of Swaledale in North Yorkshire. It's a challenging life but one she loves.

In The Yorkshire Shepherdess she describes how the rebellious girl from Huddersfield, who always wanted to be a shepherdess, achieved her dreams. Full of amusing anecdotes and unforgettable characters, the book takes us from fitting in with the locals to fitting in motherhood, from the demands of the livestock to the demands of raising a large family in such a rural backwater. Amanda also evokes the peace of winter, when they can be cut off by snow without electricity or running water, the happiness of spring and the lambing season, and the backbreaking tasks of summertime – haymaking and sheepshearing – inspiring us all to look at the countryside and those who work there with new appreciation.

even though I left chapters half way through and picked them up 3-4-5 days later, it still grabbed me every time

Loved listening to this fun, well narrated book. Really got a feel for Amanda’s personality and an insight to her journey so far! Can’t wait to start the next in the series! Doesn’t feel right that Clemmy & Nancy aren’t ‘here’ yet 😄

A lovely story, funny & poignant, beautifully read! I can't wait for the next one!

UPDATE: I started the next one, but was sadly disappointed by the new reader, who makes Clive sound like a dumb yokel 😕 I guess I'll be reading the rest.

What a lovely slice of farming life!

I've been a big fan of the Ravenseat story since I discovered their TV programme. My partner bought me this and I have had it playing in the background for the past few days. It's witty, interesting, and full of anecdotes that can bring a tear to the eye, or fits of laughter. I will be listening to this over and over, and will definitely recommend it to all my friends!

Amazing story, witty and easy listening

My first Audible book, loved it, lost myself in the story as she read it

I was fortunate enough to meet Amanda, Clive and their lovely little brood, whilst part of a canine search & rescue team in the Ravenseat area a few years ago.

They really are a smashing family and their old fashioned, honest, hard working, respectful principles, are what I feel that is sadly missing in our society today.

I would imagine that their lifestyle is akin to going back to our lovely old country 60 or 70 years ago.
Amanda’s book ‘The Yorkshire Shepherdess’ was a delight to listen to and the narrator Anne Dover did the book proud.
Ravenseat is as Amanda says, a beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales, and I am envious of her lifestyle. Hard graft, fresh air, all weathers, working with animals and a lovely, respectful family too. Good luck to them all, and I genuinely wish them all the very best. A truly wonderful story.

Truly Wonderful Story.
