Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award & Betty Trask Award 2021

2005. Glasgow is named Europe’s Murder Capital, driven by a violent territorial gang and knife culture. In the housing schemes of adjacent Lanarkshire, Scotland’s former industrial heartland, wee boys become postcode warriors.

2004. Azzy Williams joins the Young Team [YTP]. A brutal gang conflict with their deadly rivals, the Young Toi [YTB] begins.

2012. Azzy dreams of another life. He faces his toughest fight of all – the fight for a different future.

Expect Buckfast. Expect bravado. Expect street philosophy. Expect rave culture. Expect anxiety. Expect addiction. Expect a serious facial injury every six hours. Expect murder.

Hope for a way out

Inspired by the experiences of its author, Graeme Armstrong, The Young Team is an energetic novel, full of the loyalty, laughs, mischief, boredom, violence and threat of life on these streets. It looks beyond the tabloid stereotypes to tell a powerful story about the realities of life for young people in Britain today.

Critic reviews

A swaggering, incendiary debut . . . The non-standard English forges a dazzling poetry of its own . . . pitches Armstrong straight into the first division of Scottish writers. (Jude Cook)
The Young Team is a landmark in Scottish literature. It reminds me of Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby. (Damian Barr, author of Maggie & Me)
[A] gripping debut novel . . . he is quite a phenomenon . . . one of the most admired young voices in British fiction. (Mike Wade)

Brutal but brilliant book.

A tough listen at times, with the harsh reality of life, but well written and crafted throughout. One of the best books I’ve listened to. Couldn’t recommend it more.

Hard hitting & Violent!

I nearly gave up a couple of times listening to this book as I struggled with the vocabulary, slang & scots dialect at times. The content is about a young man trying to break free of drugs, violence & senseless postcode gang conflict. Whilst trying hard to make something of his life. A good nostalgic insight into lost youth but at times the book felt clichéd.

Fantastic.

So unbelievably brilliant. Gritty, real, hilarious in places, depressive in others and down right sad in others.

I couldnt stop listening to this. Parked in the car at work, late, so I could hear just one last bit.

The narration by Graeme is brilliantly done too and I'm 100% sure that this gives the audiobook a massive advantage to the written version.

Well done! This will stay with me for a long time and one I will come back to and recommend to many.

Excellent story of life in around gang culture

Fantastic story of life around Scotland’s youth gang culture and the struggles to escape it. You can tell the author is drawing on his own lived experiences .

Flashback to my youth and early twenties. Took a bit of time to get into it, but once there it was compulsive listening.

Wish you well ma man 💪🏻

Stunning book

Although I’m from east coast in Scotland and older than the protagonist- it’s a very familiar story and full of relatable characters. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone that looks at working class people in Scotland ( to be fair anywhere in the UK) and wonders why they live the life they do. A lot of the time, there’s no other option.
