You can tell the writer has been to the Himalaya.

Fantastic story - like being there on the trek. Having climbed to Everest base camp myself, I can honestly say that so much of the landscape descriptions and feelings and fears are exactly as I felts them. An outstanding work of British literature.

Another brilliant ghost story !

I absolutely loved Dark Matter, and Thin Air is equally as good. It is subtle, chilling, and you really do feel as if you are on that mountain. The narrator is excellent.
I can recommend this audiobook wholeheartedly !

Wonderfully eerie

I love the writing manner of Paver. She sets the scene masterfully in a way that makes it feel like you're right there with them. The tension rises gradually and organically, and I quite like the way she reveals the reasons for the circumstances. Only complaints are that the books are too short and that it always goes a bit better than one would expect. I, for one, could do with a bit more horror :)

Loved this atmospheric ghost story.

I loved this wonderfully atmospheric ghost story. Very similar in plot and style to the author's other novel, Dark matter. However that is a good thing, since Dark matter was also excellent. The narration was also superb.

An entertaining tale

I enjoyed this story and the narration was very pleasant to listen to. It does the job as a gentle thriller. Dark Matter was perhaps the bigger thrill. The mountain adventure was well done. I am a big fan of Michelle Paver’s books, loving the Oath Breaker series (audiobooks are superb).

Another great ghost tale by Michelle. Made me want to read those old adventure chronicles about real life journeys into the Himalayas. The actor's voice cracking had me in pieces.

Fantastic, old-fashioned ghost story

I'll start out by saying that if you are after in your face horror with gore and lots of a dreadful things that would translate well into a jump scare horror movie, this book is not for you. I'd call it very much an old-fashion style of ghost story. It's the sort that tries, and succeeds, to instil a growing sense of unease and dread with the reader. The fact that the story takes place in such a remote and wickedly cold location only adds to the horror of it. I, for one, could almost feel myself in the main character's shoes, shivering away on that cold mountainside. 

So yea, I'd say it's a very atmospheric, enjoyably slow-burn ghost story that, even if it weren't possessive of horror elements, would still be incredibly enjoyable as an adventure novel or a fictionalised account of survival in some of the world's harshest climes.

The story revolves around two brothers who seek to do what the ill-fated expedition before them could not: reach the summit of Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas. Plenty of backstory is provided on the expedition that went before and is done in such a way that makes the book feel more factual than fictional. It never felt like the author was guilty of info-dumping, which made the book an incredibly smooth read.

The author's attention to detail (she actually visited the location and that first hand-knowledge shines through), and the character building are two of her strongest suits. It's these aspects that have made me buy another of her works, keen to experience more of her horror goodness. 

So if, like me, you want a more old-fashioned dose of horror, I'd highly recommend checking this author out. The narration of Thin Air was absolutely superb and I'm sure only added to the atmospheric feel of it. Listening to this on incredibly cold and windy days was an absolute treat.

Spooky and enjoyable!

Too similar to Dark Matter

A little formulaic to be honest and not as frightening as Dark Matter which was deeply unsettling and atmospheric.
