About this listen

The name on the covers was Bachman. But the imagination could only belong to one man: Stephen King.

'Thinner' - the old gypsy man barely whispers the word. Billy feels the touch of a withered hand on his cheek.

Billy Halleck, prosperous if overweight citizen, happily married, shuddered then turned angrily away. The old woman's death had been none of his fault. The courts had cleared him. She'd just stumbled in front of his car. Now he simply wanted to forget the whole messy business.

Later, when the scales told him he was losing weight, it was what the doctor ordered. His wife was pleased - as she should have been. But....

'Thinner' - the word, the old man's curse, has lodged in Billy's mind like a fattening worm, eating at his flesh, at his reason. And with his despair, comes violence.

It’s a good story and well read. My criticism is the aged musical interludes between chapters which grate on the ear and are unnecessary.

The musical interludes let it down.

Sometimes Stephen King stories are overly descriptive which can make them difficult to follow.

I loved this. The tale was so straightforward - somebody did something wrong and revenge was taken.

Joe Mantegna is a great narrator but I couldn't get Fat Tony out of my head.

Intriguing

I love the narration of this book and the story but the music is absolutely ridiculous, not needed and frankly exceptionally irritating!

Great narrator

King ( Bachman ) at his best for me, complimented by great narration.
Definitely one of my favourites.

Very good

If you are looking for the Stephen King style, without the extensive description, this is it, incredibly easy to follow and even easier to invest in. Narration is fantastic, however, the incessant 'eerie' music added to certain moment gets somewhat tiresome after about chapter 2. Regardless of this, very much still worth the time.

A very good short listen. If you were looking to get started on some Stephen King titles and the length of others is what phased you, you couldn't really ask for a better place to start.

One of King's easier reads, but very entertaining.

Narration was great, gravelly mobster. The story itself... also great. But why the cheesy music?

It's not meant to be a musical.

Enjoyed the story , the narrator was very good and you felt part off it

The story was good but the bizarre music put me of

Why do you do this? Please just use spoken word in audio books! I get really into the story and then suddenly there is a jarring discordant musical interlude between chapters. Just read the book please. It’s not a drama presentation.

Awful musical interludes!

Great rendition of the book.
The only criticism I have is of the grating irritating music that was so jarring it really almost ruined an awesome narration by Joe Mantegna

Joe Mantegna is fabulous

Wow, I used to read SK as a teenager. Now nearly 50. What a rediscovery! Even though it’s long it’s compelling. Guess I have a lot of books to listen to now!

BRILLIANT
