Good Stories - horrible narration.

Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by Cathy Dobson?

Absolutely not.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?

Someone who doesn't drawl and growl.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Interest in the stories but irritation with the telling.

please sample before purchase

The content has a certain charm if you want to survey vintage crime short stories but there is no way of picking out one over another so you have to "take what comes" and some are just not that good. The real problem with this recording however is the narrator's voice. It's annoying in the extreme. Really.....sample beforehand and judge whether you can handle 30 hours of it......I didn't and I was sorry.

Great stories and a great long listen.

All good apart from the narrator who almost sounds bored and narrates in a very monotone voice at quite a slow speed. Otherwise, some excellent stories and there should be something for everyone that likes old detective stories.

Don't buy until you have listened to the sample

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

The book itself is probably fine, but for me it was totally unlistenable due the the awful narration.

What will your next listen be?

My next listen will be anything NOT read by Cathy Dobson.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

CD's intonation was awful, her sing-song narration was dire and did not vary. I had hoped that it would get better or that I would get used to it but sadly this was not the case

Any additional comments?

I thought this book was great value for my credit and I'm sure that I would have enjoyed most of the stories, but the narration was intolerable. I'd like my money back!

Great stories, but only one reader

Over twenty one hours of classic/Golden Age crime fiction is a bargain, but one reader with a very mannered style makes it hard work and I couldn't get through it. Something like this needs a few narrators for variety.

DON'T just don't!!!!!

Had already listened to a Max Carrados tale by Ernest Bramah narrated by Stephen Fry and found it a story that left me wanting more. So I purchased this Thirty Great Detectives Stories for more of these and a taste of other detectives. What a disappointment!!! Not the stories themselves though but the narrator's M O N O T I N O U S drawl completely killed all feeling for the stories and characters. I will never knowingly purchase a story read by Cathy Dobson ever again!
My ratings should not be a seen as a reflection on the stories but that of the narrators inability to hold the listeners attention and bring life to the imagination.

The worst narration I have ever heard

What would have made Thirty Great Detective Stories better?

A different narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She places emphasis on ALL the wrong words - is unable to speak in whole sentences which I would have thought is an essential requirement in a narrator.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Thirty Great Detective Stories?

Wouldn't have employed that narrator

Any additional comments?

Please don't employ that narrator again! She utterly ruined this series of excellent works.
