About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of This Secret We're Keeping by Rebecca Done, read by Kristin Atherton and Oliver Chris.

A pupil and a teacher. Is it ever right to break the rules?

Jessica Hart has never forgotten Matthew Landley. After all, he was her first love when she was 15 years old. But he was also her school maths teacher, and their forbidden affair ended in scandal, with his arrest and imprisonment.

Now, 17 years later, Matthew returns to Norfolk, with a new identity and a long-term girlfriend and a young daughter who know nothing of what happened before. Yet when he runs into Jessica, neither of them can ignore the emotional ties that bind them together. With so many secrets to keep hidden, how long can Jessica and Matthew avoid the dark mistakes of their past imploding in the present?

From debut author Rebecca Done, This Secret We're Keeping is a powerful and provocative novel about the ties which can keep us together - or tear us apart.

good listen

the story started quite slowly but story built well. I really enjoyed the female lead but found the male lead slightly creep during his parts, maybe that was the subject matter. I also found parts of the story like the beginnig of Jess and Matthews relationship uncomfortable, and Zac also was an uncomfortable character. Jess was endearing and it was sometimes frustrating how she was treated by varioid various characters. overall I started off not enjoying the story but it grew on me and towards the emd I cpuldnt stop listening.

This was fantastic.

What made the experience of listening to This Secret We're Keeping the most enjoyable?

The fact that the novel was read by a female and male narrator gave it additional depth as it felt like I was literally hearing Matthew and Jess's stories. Both characters had a voice, and so seemed very lifelike.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the fact that it's not your everyday run-of-the-mill romance. The novel explores a modern taboo, and asks if it's ever acceptable for a teacher to fall in love with an underaged pupil. after reading the blurb, I was determined not to like Matthew Landsley, but because the story of his relationship with Jess is told in his own words, I found it a challenge not to empathise with him, as he makes it seem so natural. The fact that my moral compass was offset throughout further added to my enjoyment, along with the twists and turns as the story unfolded.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The opening, when we're actually introduced to Jess and Matthew. In a few swift sentences, we're instantly aware of their mutual attraction for each other whilst also learning important details about each of their present lives.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not sure about moving, but I actually found the ending satisfying as it would seem that Jess is in a better position while Matthew is quite literally left out in the cold.

Any additional comments?

I look forward to reading more novels by Rebecca done in the future.

This Secret we’re keeping

Brilliant book! I hope there is a sequel, really need to know what happened - bit of a cliff hanger at the end 🥴

Excellently narrated by Kristen Atherton!

I really enjoyed this book...at times the story seem to drag on and felt a little tedious but overall, a shady subject with an insiders light.

A good listen

I downloaded this expecting nothing really, but actually I couldn't stop listening. It's nothing groundbreaking but a good listen! The ending wasn't what I expected either!

However, if you are sensitive to weird mouth noises, the female narrator can get a bit annoying at times.

Emotional reading

This was a really good book and one I’d been waiting to read for ages, over a year due to its length, trying to find time was difficult. But once I did
Start reading, I couldn’t put it down. Really good characters, some of which I disliked on principal, others when facts about them came to light later on. There was one part where I literally had a lump in my throat and almost started crying. So as not to give spoilers, I’ll just say the part at
the surgery. I nearly broke down! Really well narrated, I love Oliver Chris. But I found the end a little unsatisfactory, one of those endings where you’re left thinking well, then what? Some very tense moments, a lot of suspense and certainly issues which could be debated with controversy. My personal opinion is, once of age, what’s the problem?

Should have been shorter.

This book was quite boring . The story idea was ok but it went on , and on , and on . How many times did I hear " the day of the bbq" ? I had no sympathy for any of the characters.

Disappointed!

Was enjoying this book till three quarters to the end. Big build up with disappointing ending
It's as if the author got fed up writing the book and just made up a quick ending.
