About this listen
Mia Tang thinks she's going to have the best year ever.
She and her parents are the proud owners of the Calivista Motel, Mia gets to run the front desk with her best friend, Lupe, and she's finally getting somewhere with her writing!
But as it turns out, sixth grade is no picnic...
#1 Mia's new teacher doesn't think her writing is all that great. And her entire class finds out she lives and works in a motel!
#2 The motel is struggling, and Mia has to answer to the Calivista's many, many worried investors.
#3 A new immigration law is looming and if it passes, it will threaten everything -- and everyone -- in Mia's life.
It's a roller coaster of challenges, and Mia needs all of her determination to hang on tight. But if anyone can find the key to getting through turbulent times, it's Mia Tang!

It was a great story. It shows that not everyone has good experiences and are able to have a good place to live in.
Realy good and thoughtful book shows that not everyone gets treated the same way thank you for sharing your story

Cracking story about kindness and friendship
Kelly Yang really knows how to write. I am definitely not the target audience but felt like I learned a lot from this book. Talking to kids about immigration can be a difficult topic and there are a lot of different issues and questions raised in this book that hopefully will become talking points for kids and their families. The backdrop is California but the issues are pretty universal.
The book itself is not a downer and doesn't feel too heavy although there are sad parts. Mia is good at talking through emotions and negotiating conflicts but she doesn't always get it right first time. The story itself also isn't trying to paint anyone's behaviour as completely good or bad or trying to preach.

A beautiful twist of heart- brake and support.
True life. Two girls going through heart-wrenching experiences. One boy who struggles with his Dad to let him follow his passion and to follow his dream. A group of kids club together to help one another. A family who wants to change a law. Freedom set free. BE.

Beautiful story rooted in reality of our time
This story, or set of stories is masterfully told! That constant flutter of fear lurking in the back of many immigrants was so well depicted in this charming children’s tale. It really struck a chord with me and some of my own experiences! I wish I were a wordsmith to tell how wonderful I found this book. Listen and see how good it is! Looking forward to the next one!
