Classic Jackie Collins with brilliant narration.

“Thrill” is classic Jackie Collins .
Easy listening escapism. The narration was brilliant which made it even more enjoyable. The narrator was so good at doing all the characters voices male & female.
Highly recommend for easy listening.

Bad

There is no plot to speak of. Toe curling sex scenes. Unbearable narration. Character development is laughable. Constant descriptions of peoples beauty, or lack of.

Shocking

Okay, I am definitely not the target audience for a Jackie Collins book ... I'm male. So why am I reading it you might ask? Well, I purchased the book for my mother in law who wanted to revisit her younger days when she'd relish reading a Jackie Collins novel. However, I don't think she found the audio format something she could get on with and so I thought I'd see what the fuss was all about, rather than let the book go to waste.

As a man, I was naturally curious about the fact that Collins was known to have very raunchy sex scenes in her stories. My mother in law told me it would curl my toes etc. Okay, I thought, let's dive in and see if the hype matches the reality.

My overall reactions are: Shocked, disappointed and impressed.

I'll detail those reactions in reverse order. First, I was impressed at the quick pacing in the final stages of the story, where multiple elements were occurring at once and the story skilfully jumped between them. In overall terms, I found Collins to be a competent writer, although, I did spot some typos, which surprised me, given how big an author she was. Further, her publishers ought to have proofed her manuscripts to pick up on these.

I was disappointed because the much vaunted sex scenes in a Jackie Collins novel were a damp squib. I was expecting much more than a one or two short paragraph description that left the reader to flesh out the details. I was also shocked at those scenes that were described were lacking any of the foreplay women desire and yet the female characters seemed to find their men's rapid getting down to business all the more exciting. TO me, I thought that's precisely the opposite of what female readers were looking for. Quite frankly, the raunchiness in this novel, I haven't read any other works by Collins, were a big let down and honestly something a teenager could write.

Lastly, and the single biggest shocker in this story for me was the way Collin's portrayed all but two men in this story. My God! They were either perverts, paedophiles, pigs, pests, lecherous leeches, murderers, would be rapists, thugs, misogynists, parasites, controlling, manipulative players or just idiots. I couldn't believe what I was reading and thought that had any other demographic been singled out like this and depicted so overwhelmingly negatively and stereotypically, her book would never make it off the printing press. I just couldn't believe how men were so poorly stereotyped and generally all pretty unpleasant people. Oh, and it seemed to me that any flaws women had were as a result of the men in their lives. I sincerely hope Collins doesn't show men like this in her other novels!

Narration was generally excellent, with pauses for punctuation and nice inflections being used well. The only thing that I found annoying, at least in the initial half hour or so, was the way India drew in breaths between sentences. The sharp intake was distracting. On the other hand, India was adept at reproducing multiple accents with ease and convincingly so.

All in all, Thrill left me wondering why Jackie Collins had so poorly depicted about 50% of the world's populous in order to make her female characters stand out. The story itself was okay, mostly the superficial and shallow world of Hollywood, which i guess appeals to some. I can see why generations of women find her stories so compelling, they mix the world of the rich and famous with soap opera like dramas. That's not to say this is a bad story, just not aimed at men. Hard line feminists will likely love this I suspect as it will echo their belief that pretty much all men are bad.

disappointed

I'm sorry to say I did not enjoy this book. The story line was very weak and predictable. I used to love her books but this lacked pretty much everything.
