Miss Miss Read
About this listen
It's the May Day holiday, and a fair has come to the village of Thrush Green. The residents of Thrush Green all have their own views about the fair. For young Paul, just recovered from an illness, it is a joy to be allowed out to play at the fair; for Ruth, who returned to the soothing tranquility of Thrush Green nursing a broken heart, the fair is a welcome distraction from her own problems. And for Dr Lovell, the fair brings an unexpected new patient.
Then there is Mrs Curdle, the long-standing matriarch of the fair. For her, this year's visit to Thrush Green awakens mixed feelings, and a difficulty she doesn't want to face.©1959 Miss Read (P)2007 Orion Publishing Group LtdWhat listeners say about Thrush Green

A Great Escape
A shame only the abridged book was available, but I still enjoyed the wonderful escape that Miss Read always gives her readers. Having read the book before I did not find the way it had been abridged too noticeable. I gave it 4 stars only because I would have preferred the full story. I was a lovely book well narrated.

Wrong reader
June Barrie reads this unabridged version of the book and is an excellent reader, a thoroughly enjoyable listen. I don't know how the mistake came about but this book is well worth a listen.

Delightful
I don’t mind admitting this book is enchanting, I even shed a tear whilst listening. It harks back to a time long long ago, and the magic these words engender weave their wonderful spells, and we are reminded that words can paint pictures just as well if not better than paint.

A mug of hot chocolate
A changing of the old gard for the new in Thrush Green. As warming as hot chocolate and as beutifuly read as anything on BBC radio by Clare Higgins. Nothing to challenge but much I found to engage.

Complete escapism
For those of us who can remember the 1950s, this is a look back to the best of those days, when doctors knew and had time for their patients, where life was slower, simpler and less crowded. Perhaps not as well written as my previous read of P D James, but infinitely preferable to the dark and graphic descriptions of violence, spite and hatred so frequently a part of modern fiction. I wonder why, though, Clare Higgins is credited as the reader when the narrative clearly states it is June Barrie.

A gem of its kind
Beautifully constructed story of a spectrum of assorted characters in a single day of an English village; told with humour and affection. The reader, June Barry, could not be surpassed.

Delightful
Gorgeous book if you want an uplifting, happy read and nothing too heavy. So cosy and warm are the characters and the descriptions that you lose yourself in a bygone, simpler era. Like a warm old jumper- it’s so comfortable, safe and puts you at ease. Just love Miss Read books.
