About this listen

Two o'clock was missing.

In an alternate Victorian world controlled by clock towers, a damaged clock can fracture time - and a destroyed one can stop it completely.

It's a truth that 17-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Though Danny is a prodigy who can repair not only clockwork but the very fabric of time, his fixation with staging a rescue is quickly becoming a concern to his superiors. And so they assign him to Enfield, a town where the tower seems to be forever plagued with problems.

Danny's new apprentice both annoys and intrigues him, and though the boy is eager to work, he maintains a secretive distance. Danny soon discovers why: He is the tower's clock spirit, a mythical being that oversees Enfield's time. Though the boys are drawn together by their loneliness, Danny knows falling in love with a clock spirit is forbidden and means risking everything he's fought to achieve.

But when a series of bombings at nearby towers threaten to Stop more cities, Danny must race to prevent Enfield from becoming the next target, or he'll lose not only his father but the boy he loves - forever.

This is the stunning first novel in a new trilogy by debut author Tara Sim.

As story's with a gay protagonist go it's in the top 10s,
although the characters sexuality affects the story, it's not what the whole story is about and I love that.
The creative world and thrilling story carries itself. the gay romance is just a welcome cherry on top 🥰

Good story, rich world building, great narrator

This is my first audio book. I wasn't sure if I could really enjoy the pace of listening to a book but the reader did such a good job with it! I've listened to 5 hours of it just today and am going straight into book 2. Excellent writing as well from the author of course, otherwise I certainly wouldn't have been able to finish it.

So good

This was a different story. A cute story.
The story is slow at first and it takes some time to get interesting. The pace throughout the book is a steady slightly slow pace and there's not much suspense or action until the very last pages. Even then the pace is steady and slow.
In my opinion it lacked some explaining early on and a bit more world building to make to a 4 star book.
One of the reasons was that you had to get a a good part in before it became clear that this might be a steampunk based world. Sure the title gives a hint and the cover of the book too, but the story didn't reveal this until late in the book.

But besides that it is a decent and good book with some good themes.

Decent story

Extremely creative fantasy setting where time is both what held humanity back and what brought it forward. A way we could have developed if religion was less of an abstract but more of a fact and god of time was a bastard haha. Anyway the story takes a while to build but it give this steampunk atmospheric vibe that I do like quite a bit. Child labour is very on point as this is technically Victorian England. We got all the tropes: the missing father, the absentee mother, the sassy perky mechanic female friend, the broody yet genius male lead and a manic pixie dream second male lead who is literally a time pixie? a clock? Anyway it hits all the spots. The mystery and the reveal of the clock spirit is done very well and the cute yet kind of toxic relationship between the two of them is portrayed in a fun/lighthearted way. By toxic I mean that the clock spirit injures himself so that Dylan the mechanic will come and fix him. Dylan also gets so obsessed with the Enfield clocktower that everyone around him is telling him he is acting sus. Personally this really soured the romance for me. The mystery with his father is pretty obvious around the end, the villain is revealed, the danger averted and Dylan finally reunites with his dad? I think that is how it ends as I honestly kind of checked out in the last 3 chapters. Maybe it is the way it is written that while being atmospheric it is hard to focus on. But I really enjoyed it and looking forward to reading the other two parts of this trilogy.

Interesting concept, slightly cluncky execution

Just a note something I get my word definitions mixe up so I apologies if this doesn’t make sense 🫠
Soooo I haven’t actually finished listening to this book but I was reading the reviews and just wanted to write on because (so far) the book is super intriguing! I love whole world design and how it kinda dips into ancient Greek even though it’s based in the Victorian era. The romantic factor of this book makes it even more unique and beautiful than it already is and I love the how each character is really brought to life through their personality and personality :)
That’s alllllllll
Oh yeah and the guy reading was really good at doing different voices!!! Because sometimes when it’s just one person reading you can tell but here you can still tell but you kinda can’t idk how to put it but it’s really cool!

Haven’t finished but wanted write a review anyway
