Summary

Yorkshire, 1864. The daughter of a wealthy Yorkshire landowner, Anna Thornton leads a privileged life. But she is not content. She longs to be accepted for the free-thinking, independent woman she is. When she meets dashing adventurer Matt Cowan, she thinks she has met her soul mate. However, he’s not the man she thinks he is.

After he sets sail for South America, Anna discovers she’s pregnant. Heartbroken, she flees her family home, determined to keep her child’s illegitimacy a secret. Just when she starts to settle into her new life, strong-minded Brenton O’Mara - who has turned his back on his father’s wealth - seeks work as a labourer at Anna’s new home....

Beautiful

Really enjoyed the storyline - I like the fact that Anna was not the olden day succumbing to society type female. Lovely narration.

Good read

This story was gripping and Bengal at the same time it held bitterness and sweet in its tail and I felt it drawning me in .

Wonderful

Anne Dover is my favourite narrator. She makes every character sound different, pronounces words properly and is always a pleasure to listen to. Combined with a great story, this has been an absolute pleasure.
This book has great characters, choices and an understanding of humanity. Nothing really nasty happens, which again is a rare pleasure these days! I was hooked from the start.
I highly recommend a search for books that Anne Dover has narrated.

What a fantastic author

I’m so pleased I stumbled upon this author. Her books are gentle yet full of character, comforting yet every page leaving you wanting more, calm yet deep.

Full of complex individuals that you can relate to, each one has parts of us in them, making you wanting to inspect yourself and see how we can either better our own characters or learn from them.

These books are set in the mid 1800’s, not much more than 170 years ago. Yet sadly many of us don’t even remember the names of our own relatives that lived during this time or the stories they could tell us of those years.
Although so many good things have come about since that time, there is also so much that has set the world to become a much faster pace which in many ways is not good and we may be so much better off if we still lived within a world where the life was slower and where many people really did care, know and help each other rather than just themselves.
Wonderful books to lose yourself in a world not that long ago!

Perfect!!

Lovely, lovely story. Beautifully written and beautifully narrated.
Anne Dover cleverly makes one believe we are there with all the characters. I have to remind myself that this is only one person portraying every one of those characters voices. Equall y brilliant is the author. Magic!

Superb book

Loved it ,loved it, loved it.
I have put her other books on my wish list , After checking the narration.Ann Dover is a super narrator. The exception are books under 9 hours because they are bad value.

Brilliant

What a lovely story read beautifully by Anne Dover. I’ve only recently started listening to books written by AnneMarie Brear and found all of her stories excellent and once started found them hard to put down. I can’t wait to start listening to another book.
