About this listen
In mid-nineteenth-century Ireland, charming Kathleen and dashing Michael harbor secrets and dreams. Imagining a life beyond the kitchen and fields of the wealthy family they both work for, they plot to leave their homeland, marry, and raise the child Kathleen is secretly carrying. The luck of the Irish, however, is not on their side.
Soon, they find themselves swept up in circumstances they never could have fathomed. Kathleen is forced to marry against her will and immigrate to New Zealand. Michael is imprisoned for rebellion and exiled to Australia. As time passes and their new lives march on, they long for those stolen moments in the lush green fields of their native land. And they both still dream of escape, with no idea of how close fate will eventually bring them.

Narrator
I enjoyed listening to this story but agree with another comment. The narrator had a very boring voice.

Good story terrible wooden narration
I had read the book before and enjoyed the story. I thought I would enjoy the narration but very distracted by the wooden, clipped voice. Each word pronounced as though completely separate from the next, no flow.

Pleasant story
The storyline was entertaining & was nice to listen to while I walked my dog. A decent story with a satisfying ending.
At times the narrators poor accents for each character felt like listening to something from a bad west end stage play. But once I tuned this out the story was enjoyable.
Would have been great if the male characters were read by a male actor & female role by an actress.

great period drama on a subject little spoken of.
really enjoyed my listen of this book, about an era little spoken of today when men were sent to Australia rather than prison. loved every minute of this story

Toward the sea of freedom
I think I would have enjoyed this book but unfortunately due to the poor tone and the awful narrator couldn't listen to it.
