Summary

This mesmerizing, surreal account of the bizarre adventures of Terence McKenna, his brother Dennis, and a small band of their friends, is a wild ride of exotic experience and scientific inquiry. Exploring the Amazon Basin in search of mythical shamanic hallucinogens, they encounter a host of unusual characters - including a mushroom, a flying saucer, pirate Mantids from outer space, an appearance by James and Nora Joyce in the guise of poultry, and translinguistic matter - and discover the missing link in the development of human consciousness and language.

Eye Opening and Hilarious

This book provides ample substance toward understanding and pursuing the psychospiritual maturation. It just so happens to narrate like some sort of hilarious travel book.

Insightful

I could not have read the physical book but listening to the audio book was interesting, unsettling and insightful

Would be 5 stars

If they had the Terrance readings it would be far better, the guy is a little soulless while reading witty m commentary.

A perspective of the mind immersed in the supernatural of the natural

My only disappointment was that this wasn't narrated by the man himself however the designated narrator delivers a fantastical yet grounded recitement and Terrence's articulation. This book can stand alone as an account of stories told by a hippie of the times following the summer of love and the impact of LSD on a group of wayward academics. It is much more than that but it is down to the reader to extrapolate from between the fact of the matter and Terrence's story.

Good book but narrator not my cup of tea

Really enjoyed the story and content, found the voice of the narrator a bit monotone and took away from my enjoyment

True World Destiny

no words to truly describe this book other than mind blowingly possible and some out of world shit that we will never know without the legalisation of mushrooms and other tryptamine compounds

Hippy time travel

What an adventure. I was rather worried for Dennis, it's all very well adventuring into the unknown, but you have to make it back in one piece!

Part cosmic meditation, part incredible journey

I didn't know what to expect at all, and came into this book totally blind (bar some light reading on Terence McKenna and a few of his recorded lectures) and emerged with a starkly different view of the man vs my expectation.

In short, I now have a huge amount of respect for the journey the group went on (which is described in this book) - what an incredible time!

Would recommend for those who are curious about dmt, psilocybin and the effects of their consumption (both well regulated and some times excessive) on a person, group, mind state and how these effects helped in the development of a theory about the fabric of time.

Listened after a long ponder

long time fan of McKenna, never read this and was put off by the narrator, but it's worth perseverance and the tale wins out in the end.
