The only contemporary novel I have read that stands up against classics. Incredibly intricate but the prose moves lightly.

It loops around like something from Borges might but has a natural flow that never feels weighed down. Exceptional on a line level but so complex in its structure that it is hypnotic. There's a deceptive simplicity that is peeled away again and again.

So impressive, really enjoyed it.

This is an intriguing intellectual exercise of a novel. As Mildred said: 'the right notes without any sense of rhythm". This is perhaps a little harsh but I did enjoy the book more with my head than my heart. I loved the final section and if history is often written by the survivors I was really pleased to see Mildred's story emerge from the shadows.

I really enjoyed this book but was a little lost at certain points. The second part needed some explanation as it felt really disjointed from the first part. It all tied together well in the end.

I always tend to enjoy a story told from several different view points. As the final chapter unfolded it was quite unnerving to discover how one may have been totally mislead by the previous narratives.
Knowing very little about the world of finance it was fascinating to learn how the Wall Street crash may have happened, or been engineered. With the termoil currently being experienced in financial markets I found the tale particularly disturbing.

After asking us to question the reality behind the stories we are told and the complexities of events and individuals, the ending suddenly reverts to cliché and transforms the subjects into 2 dimensional characters worthy of a bad comic book.

It took me perhaps a third of the book to understand what it is: a collection of perspectives on one woman’s story and on the momentous consequences of her story. Initially I mistook the novel for a somewhat loathsome celebration of market economics and philanthropy by money makers. It is not that at all and it becomes richer. Particularly enjoyed the story of her biographer, and the writing of the end section is exquisite. A book has to be very special for me to want to read it twice and I am curious enough, now I’ve reached the end, to start again and read it with foresight.

I was quite confused at the beginning of this book- I hadn’t expected a compete past narrative of a rich financier’s life, which then segued into a similar narrative of a man who you then come to understand is one and the same..Finally the story takes shape and emotion as we hear the journalist’s story and finally that of the protagonist’s wife, Mildred..who is really who the book is about..and a mystery is solved.
Beautiful prose, some memorable phrases which resonate even today..
