Summary

Encephalitis almost ended Chris Maxwell's life. The scar tissue in his brain and life with epilepsy made him - and his family and friends - feel like the life they'd known changed suddenly and permanently. For Maxwell and the staggering number of people facing traumatic brain injuries, epilepsy, or other painful encounters, life is experienced through a different lens. Names are tough to remember. Medication is a common acquaintance. Exhaustion, seizures, and mood swings are daily traveling companions. Maxwell's writing and the stories of others offers hope. Hope that you're not alone, even when your experience underwater seems to change everything.

Inspiring tale!

Hi Chris. I’m Ross Clark from Glasgow, Scotland. 9 years ago I suffered a blow to the head. From then on out, I started taking seizures without any warning signs, auras etc. It took the NHS a year to diagnose me with epilepsy and a small non cancerous tumour on my front temporal lobe. The neurologists always thought the seizures were coming from then tumour. 5 years later I finally got my 5 day EEG. It turns out I was having seizures come from 2 separate parts of the brain. Underwater (your book) has really just opened my eyes and made me see a path which is right for me. I’m scared to ask for help because of pride from my previous life. I’m slowly realising while listening to this, that tomorrow morning, I’m going to ask family for help. I never thought anyone could explain with words what I feel like everyday, every hour, every minute! Where you mentioned about having the chance to start all over again and become someone to help others like us, made me realise how true it sounds. I have a daughter who’s only 20 months old but already so much like the old me, yet I dread the day of putting my stress on her shoulders. So I need to start the “new me” if I can receive the help I need from being underwater. Exceptional story .. THANK YOU!!
