About this listen

This Is Going to Hurt was the publishing phenomenon of the century, read by many millions, loved by at least fifty of them, and adapted into a major TV series. But it was only part of the story.

By turns hilarious, heartbreaking and humbling, Undoctored is about what happens when a doctor hangs up his scrubs, but medicine refuses to let go of him.

It's about an extraordinary medical school education.

It's about opening old wounds and examining the present-day scars.

It's about hospital admissions and personal ones.

It's about blowing up your life and stitching it back together.

It's about being a doctor and being a patient.

It's about 300 pages long.

Undoctored is Adam Kay's funniest and most moving book yet—an astonishing portrait of a life in and out of medicine, from one of Britain's finest storytellers.

This unabridged audio download, narrated by the author, features extra diary entries recorded in audio for the first time, and an audiobook exclusive interview with bestselling author and broadcaster The Reverend Richard Coles.

Thank you Adam for such a beautiful book. It made me smile for many reasons, and it was encouraging hearing you open up about you struggles and traumas. I am so thankful for you sharing your stories x

Simply brilliant

Unlike the other books by Kay, this account goes far more in depth into Adam's life before and after leaving medicine. Funny, in many places, and poignant, he discusses the reality of working in medicine; the loneliness, the need for perfection, the often inherent and generationally ingrained lack of support for struggling young doctors. Important for anyone who wants to know the real burden that doctors (all medical staff) are carrying. It genuinely makes you pleased that he's in a happier place in his life.

Adam Kay unpacks the truth of the medical profession and parts of his life with warmth, insight and wit. I hope the powers that be in the NHS can humble themselves for a moment and take on board Kay’s extremely wise words, as he speaks for the many. Kay is a wonderful writer who pushes apart the black and the white and deconstructs the grey areas in which we live our lives. In this unstable world full of fake news and false ‘facts’, Adam Kay is someone we can trust.
Thank you for your books. I hope you keep writing.

Wonderful and informative and very, very funny

Adam tells you how it is. It's not nice to hear because we do expect our clinicians to be machines and or made of granite. However medicine and the public's perception of it needs to change if we have any hope of saving the NHS. Adam is the reluctant vanguard of this change - I hope the Royal colleges are listening... ps I've worked in the NHS for 33 years , and yes it is currently on a "life support machine".

Brutally honest. But True.

The book is more of an autobiography the the previous ones with fewer jokes but this only makes the honesty within it hit home a little harder. I hope it achieves the same level of public consciousness as the previous books as these stories need to be heard because so many people with similar experiences need to know they are not alone.

Honest and shocking

I expected nothing less from Adam Kay. Read his previous book and this one is humbling .. well done.

After This is going to hurt, I enjoyed this book as it gave me more insight into life after doctor and Adams life in general! Thought the bad reviews were a bit short sighted - it’s interesting and funny
