About this listen

A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in Pakistan. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a girl can go from pauper to princess or princess to pauper in the mere seconds it takes for her to accept a proposal. But Alys Binat is resolute she will not marry. This warm and witty tug-of-love between mothers, daughters and rich, eligible bachelors is a fresh take on Jane Austen’s original.

This is a great rewrite. Resetting the story in Pakistan allows some interesting themes and ideas to be explored. I have read a lot of rewrites and tributes and I think this is the best as it brings a fresh perspective and reframes while able to stay faithful to the text. It is not as funny as Austen, but nothing is, however it is witty and well observed.

A clever and thoughtful tribute

Indian pride and prejudice basically. It’s not amazing but I think I’ve come across so many adaptations now I’m looking for something else.

Jane Austen's novel Pride and prejudice is one of my all time favourites and this modern day version set in Pakistan lived up to my expectations. Even knowing the story so well theis book delighted me.

Just loved it

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books so I approached this with some trepidation. I need not have worried.
I loved the way it intertwined the original novel (the main character teaches English literature) with a retelling of the story. It was interesting to see how it translated to a Pakistani setting. Touching and funny by turns, with well developed characters. Interesting to see how these were brought up to date, bringing out the humanity of some who were objects of ridicule in the original.

The wonderful narrator who had a wide range of voices made this a pleasure to listen to.

Very interesting
