About this listen

Reunited with his crew aboard the frigate HMS Themis, Captain Charles Hayden is ordered by the Admiralty to the West Indies to carry war to the French among their own islands.

Before he makes port in Barbados, the Themis intercepts a single boat adrift in the middle of the ocean - its sole occupants, two young Spanish noblemen. But not is all as it seems with Hayden’s unexpected guests.

Praise for the author: ‘An unqualified seal of approval for Under Enemy Colours. This is gloriously readable stuff.’ ( THE BOOKSELLER)

I came late to this series having read all the usual suspects in this genre.I had low expectations but was surprised by the authority of the author in all aspects of the history and development of the story.Everything you could ask for in terms of
" Being there".You can smell the cordite and ozone. It was in the end moving and complete.

Surprisingly moving and complete

I would have preferred the same narrator as the previous books, however Daniel Philpott did a good job.

Good book, good series

I was left a little disappointed with the latest book in the series. The narration was definitely found lacking when compared to the previous books and the characters therefore came over as a bit one dimensional. whether this was completely down to the narration, or there was also a drop in overall quality is difficult to say. For me Haydon seemed to have changed from a believable sea hero to an upper class youngster in a series of contrived situations. Hopefully we will see a return to the quality of books 1&2. for the next release, or i think ill be giving this series a miss.

A little disappointed after good first books

Good but less enthralling than previous Hayden books. Different narrator to the first three books. not as good.

4th in the series is a little tired

Great take as usual.

While the narration is good, unfortunately the narrator is not as good as previous excellent ones.

It is not that he is a bad reader, only he has a high voice, with little range. He therefore is not suited to rugged sailor types. He also lacks the range of regional accents required. All the men sound like similar young boys.

Good as ever, narrator not as good

Really enjoyed 1st two books in series . The main character seemed so much different and combined with change in narrator book 4 made this book lacking somewhat. If another book came out would still give a try if only to see if main character reverted to previous self

Enjoyed 1st two books very much

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If I had friends that were as interested in Napoleonic war fiction as I am then yes I would. If my friend were Patrick O'Brien though I'd probably say it was a bit rubbish and then continue to read it in secret.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Luckily for me the fact that it was on a naval ship during the Napoleonic Wars was the most interesting aspect. The least was the overblown love story that seemed to take over a good few hours of unnecessary prose where there could have been more killing Frenchies or discussions on how to get the most wind into the sails so that she could reach Martinique by next Tuesday (for example).

What about Daniel Philpott’s performance did you like?

I think the rather innocent and gentle reading created a character that was certainly there but maybe understated the more exciting elements of the tale. Generally though, a good job. Well done Dan.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The emotion of sailors at the sinking of an enemy vessel is particularly well captured, although don't expect too much emotion out of this one. Just some good old England beating the French in the face of damnable odds etc.

Well Buckle my Swash

I was, like some of my fellow readers, a bit surprised that the narrator changed for this last book ( is there another to come?) but I still enjoyed the listen and thought the performance taken in isolation was good.

Changes not withstanding
