À onze ans, la petite Verte ne montre toujours aucun talent pour la sorcellerie. Pire que cela, elle dit qu'elle veut être quelqu'un de normal et se marier. Elle semble aussi s'intéresser aux garçons de sa classe et ne cache pas son dégoût lorsqu'elle voit mijoter un brouet destiné à empoisonner le chien des voisins. Sa mère, Ursule, est consternée. C'est si important pour une sorcière de transmettre le métier à sa fille. En dernier ressort, elle décide de confier Verte une journée par semaine à sa grand-mère, Anastabotte. Puisqu'elles ont l'air de si bien s'entendre. Dès la première séance, les résultats sont excellents. On peut même dire qu'ils dépassent les espérances d'Ursule. Un peu trop, peut-être.
