Summary
In 1035, a young 15-year-old Viking is dragged wounded from the battle. Left for dead, for the next 20 years his adventures lead him over mountains, down the length of Russia and ultimately to Constantinople and the Holy City of Jerusalem.
Drawn into political intrigue, he will be the lover of empresses, the murderer of an emperor; he will hold the balance of power in the Byzantine Empire in his hands and then give it all up for a Russian princess and the chance to return home and lead his own people. There, he must fight the demons of his past, his family and his countrymen in a long and bitter war for revenge and power.
Told in his own voice, this is the astonishing true story of the most famous warrior in all Christendom: Harald Hardrada, the last Viking.

I loved this book
The story of harald hardrader that was never Tought in school. I like the way a true historic character has his achievements laid out with fictional story linking them together because now I know who he is and what he did if it wasn’t for the story linking it together I’d probably struggle to remember everything.

Absolutely gripping in word and voice
The best telling of Harald Hardrada's story by a superb author and narrated by a brilliant voice of Jonathan McGarrity. The northern accent adds such depth to the character and helps define his scandinavian background as well as reflecting the danish roots of the North.

A story, based on facts, which keeps the reader coming back for more. A mine of information.

Putting the Hard into Hardrada
Reads more like an imagined biography for Harald Sigurdsson rather than a typical novel, but a really interesting listen and sheds light on a fascinating character who I knew little about. I live in the next village to Stamford Bridge and it’s made me want to learn a lot more about the events surround Harald’s death. One gripe would be that I thought the narrator could have differentiated the accents of some of characters a little bit more.

Familiar yet so different
This was my first story by Justin Hill and I have to admit that I rather quite liked it. 😊
It was my first book outside of Bernard Cornwell’s The Last Kingdom series and I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Harald Hardrada’s life and experiences and it left me thinking what would have happened if he’d arrived after the Normans had. What a different world we would be living in right now.

Entertaining
I took a few chapters to get into this book but once I got into it I did enjoy it although sometimes I was a little bit irritated with Harald I thought he was a bit cocky at times and quite flippant but all in all a decent read although not one of the best

Fantastic.
Really enjoyed this. Gritty storytelling of a fascinating king's saga. Justin really did his research bringing Harald's tale to life and made you love the character.

Not a patch on Shieldwall
I was disappointed, it felt rushed too little time spent on any one place or time. No secondary characters worth caring about either.

Epic Tale of the Last Great Viking
It's interesting to think how different history would have been had Harald Hardrada defeated Harold Godwinson at Stamford Bridge and then repulsed William the Conqueror's invasion. It's a pity this epic tale was somewhat undercut by a pedestrian narration. Still, as a lifelong student of Viking history, it was worth a listen.
