About this listen

Born at the end of the First World War, a young girl struggles to find her own identity in her big family and is pushed into a stormy marriage through a terrible misunderstanding from which her pride refuses to let her back down. As her own personal world begins to crumble, the foundation of the world around her is shaken as Germany once again declares war and her brothers and young husband sign up with the first wave of volunteers.

Walking Wounded tells the story of those left behind in a Blitz-ravaged London and of the web of loyalty, guilt, and duty that shapes the decisions of the women awaiting the return of their men-folk as the war draws to a close.

Spanning the period from the Armistice of the First World War to the exodus of the Ten Pound Poms to Australia in the 1950s, Walking Wounded is a family saga whose internal violence is mirrored by the world stage upon which it is set.

This is the story of a close family. The characters are so complete, I was drawn In immediately. In fact, I felt that I was one of the family. I followed their lives and their losses as if they were my own.

The story is told from several points of view, and I found this really helped me to get to know them all. It was always very clear whose actions and thoughts I was hearing about.

Place this heartfelt saga against a backdrop of the two world wars, and it turns a good story into a great story. It’s not always an easy listen and you will most definitely feel a myriad of emotions. I cried at many of the scenes, and at the news received by the folk in this story.

Beautiful writing that flows and carries you from one event to the next. What a wonderful tribute to the brave men who fought for us, and for the equally courageous women who kept the country going in their absence.

The narration is perfect for the story. I liked Amy Putt’s voice and found it easy to listen to.

I would definitely recommend this audiobook, and look forward to listening to Osborne’s other audiobook - ‘Beyond Time and Tide.

An amazing Family Saga, packed full of emotion.
