Summary

Michael Morpurgo’s classic tale, capturing the power of the human spirit.

Beautifully performed by Dan Stevens, ‘War Horse’ has taken the world by storm. First published back in 1982, the book was adapted to the stage and was performed at the National Theatre and on Broadway.

At the outbreak of World War 1, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France.
He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to the trenches to find him and bring him home.

Lovely Story

Having seen the theatre production in London, of this story, I was intriqued to find out how the book compared. I have to say, it made a long car journey very enjoyable. The story, told from the 'horses mouth' bought home the sadness and horror that the horses endured during the 1st world war. Very thought provoking!

War Horse

This book stopped me going to sleep, normally I listen to a couple of chapters then I am ready for sleep. It is a story told from the horses perspective and his friendship with the people he meets along his way. It wasnt mushy but it did make me cry a little, a story that just leads you on and on. A bit like a lovely walk where you want to see the view over the hill and it takes you on for miles. Brilliant, thank you Michael Morpurgo for writing a very special book.

superb

Michael Morpergo is a wonderful author and his anti war stories are measured and well thought out. Dan Stephen's narration brings this book to bittersweet life and is thoroughly engaging.

War Horse review

I loved war horse! This was one of the best Michael Morpurgo books I have read along side Toro Toro. I cried at least twice when I listened to this book. I love the way Michael Morpurgo made you think you knew the characters as if they were your best friends, that is probably why I cried 😢 This audio book was also read very well so well done to Dan Stevens!

Excellent listen. Just as I expected. Will watch the film of the story now.
Narrator kept my interest in the story throughout.

My type of story

I enjoyed this book very much. There are sad bits and happy bits like all other classic animals stories, ie Black Beauty, Lassie, etc. Michael does a very good job narrating which helped pass a few hours of boring weeding in the garden. And, as often happens I much preferred the book to the film.

Touching and engaging

I have put off watching the film or reading the book as I was worried I would find it too upsetting (childhood experiences of Black Beauty!!). Finally plucked up the courage to download this version and found the story to be touching without being maudling and is narrated perfectly.
