Summary
Thrust by a mysterious portal into an unknown world, Nick Barnette does what anyone would do in his situation: he runs. Now separated from his friends, and being pursued by powerful forces he doesn’t understand, Nick must navigate the Kingdom of Lhasa and figure out how to get home.

A great listen
This is a departure from what Harmon usually gives us, but the characters and humour are still there. The pace of the story was good, and I could feel myself becoming immersed in the story.
The main character is Nick who is drawn into a place that he does not know, yet he adapts well and grows. The characters that he meets are intriguing and some are funny as hell, all of whom keep you hooked. I liked the way that Nick was upfront with the other characters which enabled their story to come through which made them all relatable (even Roger the bird). Towards the end of the book, Nick reminded me of a shaman with his fire elemental helping him fight.
I know some may not like Neil narrating this, but I've listened to others that he's done for Harmon and I've enjoyed every one of them.
I would highly recommend this audiobook.

Solid start
This is one of those books that once you have listened to it, you realise that 8 hours has past. Upon reflection I can’t actually think of anything I didn’t like about the book, I would recommend!

Really Enjoyable Story
From the very beginning I was drawn into a very entertaining story that kept my interest throughout. Looking forward to getting drawn back into this great story with the second book.

a decent start
it's pretty obvious that this is the authors first attempt at this particular genre, but it's a fair jumping off point for the series and I have high hopes for the future books.
the world is compelling, filled with interesting lore and characters.
our MC is relatable and occasionally funny.
I'll be picking up the next book as well, but that might be because I enjoy Coopers books in general
Neil does a fair job, never outright impressing me, but neither does he ever disappoint, he just delivers good solid work

Brilliant!
I was given a free copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary.
I loved this book from the start, it draws you in very quickly, and take a you on an adventure.
The concept is great, the characters are very likeable.
The narration is superb giving each character individualailty.

An amazing intro to wuxia
I just need to say this before I review the book: Neil's voice is absolutely amazing. I had to pause 5 minutes into the book, and message the author about how ridiculously fitting Neil's performance was! Lately, I have been leaning more into dual narration for audiobooks, and didn't think I could go back from it. But with the performance Neil gave, I would easily listen to his other works.
I've gone through this book twice now. The first time through, I immediately admired how the MC not only goes with the flow, but applies his common sense to issues at hand—other than the times he got screwed over after seeing the best in people. He was able to learn from his mistakes, simultaneously going through the motions of the way of the immortals. The second time, the audible version, allowed me to pick up details I haven't noticed before. Not to mention reinforcing the voices my mind put on the characters prior to listening to Neils performance. I enjoyed how the story progressed but was still disappointed by some things.
Although the MC, Nick, goes through a zero to hero phase, it lacked emotional turmoil and inner conflict of getting thrown into a new world. The sense of urgency seems to be amiss, when dealing with killing other sentient beings—since he isn't used to it from his life in earth—and his devotion to his friends. However by the end of the novel, the issues I had can be explained by the MC possibly going through a "Rebirth," and reacting on an instinctual level.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and will most definitely listen to it again right before the next one comes out. I highly recommend it to others and its a wonderful introduction to the wuxia world.

I'm cultivating a taste for the genre
I rather enjoyed this portal fantasy which, from my perspective as an outsider, fits what I understand of the cultivation sub-genre. Nick is sucked into a fantasy world via a portal at a stag night (bachelor party) along with the other people there. He's immediately separated from his friends and not sure if any survived.
He has some pleasant things happen, gets enslaved, gets free and then finds himself on the Path of the Divine. If he can cultivate his abilities he'll be on the way to immortality and it'll give him the ability to fight the enemies he makes on day 1 in this new world, find his friends if they're still alive and free the slaves. Which is nice.
I happen to volunteer at a mindfulness charity which is run by Tibetan Buddhists so a lot of the cultural references and discussion of meditation were very familiar to me. It seemed the author has a good handle on that or at least, good enough to make it seem plausible (bearing in mind the world the main character is in is fantasy so it's only drawing on Earth culture for inspiration).
I really enjoyed Roger, a companion that Nick picks up early on and was amused by the running joke that people ignore what he's telling them about him and don't take him seriously/believe him.
The action is fine and the author throws plenty of stones at Nick along the way, he doesn't get much of a break.
I'm looking forward to the next one and will definitely check out more of the author's work.
