About this listen

Frances Willard was an American suffragette, educator, and the national president of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. "We Sang Rock of Ages" is an excerpt from Willard’s autobiography Glimpses of Fifty Years, first published in 1889.

In this excerpt, Willard gives us a deeper understanding of the ethos of the woman’s temperance movement, as well as the day to day struggles and triumphs of the movement in the US at the time. This is a great piece of writing and is historically significant, particularly Willard’s firsthand recollections of the Women’s Crusades, non-violent protests held by women against the dangers of alcohol consumption. These usually entailed protests and prayer groups in the hazardous environment of saloons.
