About this listen
In this hard-rocking, spine-tingling supernatural thriller, the washed-up guitarist of a '90s heavy metal band embarks on an epic road trip across America and deep into the web of a sinister conspiracy.
Grady Hendrix, horror writer and author of Paperbacks from Hell and My Best Friend's Exorcism, is back with his most electrifying novel yet. In the 1990s, heavy metal band Durt Wurk was poised for breakout success - but then lead singer Terry Hunt embarked on a solo career and rocketed to stardom as Koffin, leaving his fellow bandmates to rot in obscurity.
Two decades later, former guitarist Kris Pulaski works as the night manager of a Best Western - she's tired, broke, and unhappy. Everything changes when a shocking act of violence turns her life upside down, and she begins to suspect that Terry sabotaged more than just the band.
Kris hits the road, hoping to reunite with the rest of her bandmates and confront the man who ruined her life. It's a journey that will take her from the Pennsylvania rust belt to a celebrity rehab center to a music festival from hell. A furious power ballad about never giving up, even in the face of overwhelming odds, We Sold Our Souls is an epic journey into the heart of a conspiracy-crazed, pill-popping, paranoid country that seems to have lost its very soul...where only a lone girl with a guitar can save us all.

Epic
This story is epic. Nice plot, even if nothing new, and good characters. Most of all, it brought back so many memories starting with the chapter titles recalling specific albums that I used to listen to. Loved the journey and the authenticity of the approach. Mostly for metal heads, I would say.

interesting story
Worth sticking with through a slow start for the plot and it's description of metal like it used to be!

Superb
I'm a big fan of Grady Hendrix's work, and this is hands down his best work to date. Hugely entertaining, brilliantly written and scary in all the right places. a love letter to both metal and horror but also with a lot of heart. Carol Monday does a sterling job of narrating this tale that will stick with you long after you've read it, and will also make you think twice before you sign anything again. 😉

a lot of heavy metal, little horror
I've always wanted to read books from this author as reviews say how scary some of the stories are but I don't think they are. I love heavy metal and loved all the references but wanted a little more scare. The story was good and different from anything I've read before. For me it just lacked the scare factor but maybe I'm looking at the wrong books for that

Almost Brilliant
🧡 Grady Hendricks has a restrained horror genre all his own. Like how he mixes 90s nostalgia with satanic panic and underpins it with a sinister supernatural plot. It’s foreboding, chilling but somehow light and thoughtful too. It’s also completely addictive and immersive.
💚 Some of my favourite aspects were the main character, Kris, for her bolshiness and strength and humour, and the build up to the climax towards the end using the song lyrics.
💜BUT, it felt like the dots weren’t fully joined up. Things were mentioned then thrown away. While the climax was well-developed, I don’t feel the same can be said for the back story of the band or their songs. It needed more history.

SOUNDBITE
🎧 There’s a lot to like about this audiobook. Carol Monda delivers a pithy performance full of attitude as Kris, making this a truly effortless listen.
🎧 I do wonder if some of the lore in the songs might have been better suited for the written version, allowing for rereading important bits. Possibly something might have been done to balance that out by making more of the fact that this was an audio production. Not adding music or anything, but signposting in some way using sound effects.

Absolutely stellar narrator
narration really elevated the whole thing for me. would I have enjoyed the book as much with a different narrator? I don't know and don't plan on finding out.
