Anno 724 gründete der Hl. Pirmin ein Kloster, das sich rasch zu einem Zentrum der benediktinischen Geisteskultur entwickelte. Berühmt wurde Reichenau als hohe Schule der mittelalterlichen Buchmalerei und Geschichtsschreibung. Das Bild der Insel wird von ihren drei Kirchengeprägt: Von der Klosterkirche mit karolingischen Elementen in Mittelzell, der romanischen Basilika in Niederzell und St. Georg mit seinen Wandmalereien in Oberzell. Seit 2000 gehört die Insel mit dem Kloster zum UNESCO-Welterbe.
