Summary
Kellan considers himself lucky to have an adequate existence on Earth where, in the year 2044, common citizens toil under the oppressive thumb of a corrupt and unscrupulous government. Kellan dreams of becoming part of the Department of Paranormal, Supernatural, and Fantasy Sciences, but his application is continually denied because he has no extra-sapien blood. Kellan’s simple reality shifts when Rhône unexpectedly enters his life.
Rhône, living in a camouflaged, underground village, never planned to get involved with an individual from the outer world. When Rhône and Kellan cross paths, there’s no denying the attraction and pull between them. But there’s something else, something more, just beneath the surface.
A hidden world and painful secrets are a potentially complicated blend. However, with Rhône by his side, enlightening details and unexplored powers provide Kellan with an opportunity for deep self-discovery. Will Kellan’s open and accepting heart allow for an extraordinary love to bloom? Or will the vast differences between Kellan and Rhône take root and strangle any hope for a flourishing future?
What Blooms Beneath is an LGBT+ fantasy romance featuring a pansexual male and genderqueer intersex individual.

as good as the ebook
The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.
The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.
PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!
To my ratings:
5* - very very good
it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A
3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Felt More Like a Political Manifesto Than a Romanc
What Blooms Beneath is a standalone romance set in a contemporary world with paranormal and fantasy elements. I really wanted to like this book because it had a really interesting premise and plot set in a fascinating world. Unfortunately, this book read more like a political manifesto instead of a romance. I completely agree with the political views that the author was extoling, but how the author presented these views did not work well with the prose and storytelling. There was too much “telling” within this story. Instead of developing the characters and plot and using their actions to demonstrate and show the different policies and views that the author was conveying, the author simply used long descriptions and internal monologues. It did not make for an entertaining or enthralling story. I think the author could revamp this book and do some more development with the characters and plot in order to have more action and less monologues. This would make the book more interesting. All in all, the book was not bad, but it was not really engaging or entertaining.
