Summary

Oliver Reed may not have been Britain's biggest film star - for a period in the early 70s he came within a hairsbreadth of replacing Sean Connery as James Bond - but he is an august member of that small band of people, like George Best and Eric Morecambe, who transcended their chosen medium, became too big for it even, and grew into cultural icons.

For the first time Reed's close family has agreed to collaborate on a project about the man himself. The result is a fascinating new insight into a man seen by many as merely a brawling, boozing hellraiser. And yet he was so much more than this. For behind that image, which all too often he played up to in public, was a vastly complex individual, a man of deep passions and loyalty but also deep-rooted vulnerability and insecurities. Why was a proud, patriotic, intelligent, successful and erudite man so obsessed about proving himself to others, time and time again? Although the Reed myth is of Homeric proportions, he remains a national treasure and somewhat peculiar icon.

AN unexpected GEM !! Laughed my Ass off,,

Never a fan of the spoilt rich KIDS,, I saw Ollie as an excursion into sheer insanity, however what I found was a man with an amazing heart and a stupid and dangerous idea of FUN,,
I have to say out of the many books I have listened too, I have laughed more to this than the comedian and funni people bio's.
He truly took life by the Balls and literally showed them to all who would look,, (See tattoo section) his love of life and his kindness were brilliant but his SHEER lunacy is how I see this sexist asshole/true gentleman,
His life was the greatest of all the LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL AND NEVER FORGET YOUR ROOTS stories,,
I am in awe of his kindness and disgusted by his shouvenist ways yet I feel that for much he can be forgiven, for every stupid sexist prank he then returned with many acts of pure kindness and love.
IF you want to laugh ,,, Try it,, I was very pleasantly surprised with Ollie and I am now watching and listening to his back catalogue as he inspires a little Madness in ME

What Fresh Lunacy is this ?

Really enjoyable biography of a man who really did make the ‘air move’
Oliver Reed is one of those remarkable characters for which there is absolutely no grey area in respect to liking him as a human being, his merits as an actor not really up for debate.
I love these type of characters. There is never a dull moment with them, & I do believe that the world is poorer without them too. This is a really good biography that holds the listener & reader really well, I couldn’t ‘put it down’
I’m a big fan of Sean Barrett whose voice characterisations along with Theresa Gallagher in Dickens’ Bleak house, but it must be said he doesn’t catch Stan Boardman’s scouse brogue…..
I came away from this with more respect for Oliver Reed than I had formerly, and I’m sure this applies to quite a few more people which is no bad accomplishment for the author Robert Sellers.
Highly recommended.

The best book about the best man.

Superbly read and containing enough anecdotes to keep you going for a lifetime, this is a must purchase for any fan of Oliver Reed. They don't make them like him anymore.

A life of excess and excellence.

Never be another actor that brought so much controversy to ones profession. A great listen.

Very interesting.

A interesting and very entertaining insight into a true Wimbledon icon. Funny in part, but seeing his addiction to booze never really allowed Oliver to realise his full potential until the very end.

Breathless

An absolute masterpiece. The brashness, vulnerability, and pigheadedness of a misogynistic genius.
