Summary
The Mummy meets Death on the Nile in this lush, immersive historical fantasy, filled with adventure, a rivals-to-lovers romance, and a dangerous race.
A divine exploration. A deadly secret. A desire she can't escape.
Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that's been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns for the most: her globetrotting parents - who frequently leave her behind when they venture off on their exploring adventures.
When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an rchaeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and an ancient golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there's more to her parent's disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.
With her guardian's infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parent's disappearance-or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.

Great Narrator
I loved the gentle telling of this story, She painted a picture of Egypt that I also naively believe it to be like. My kind of story.

Excellent narration, good story
Ana Osorio is a fantastic narrator, she switches from English to Spanish with such ease, it's a pleasure to listen to if only for the sake of it.
The story is great for young adults - treasure hunters with a female protagonist in 19th century Egypt, with lots of twists and turns - but it is not original and the female protagonist is a little over the top.

Cozy and unexpected
The plot is clever with little twists I wasn’t expecting, with storytelling that painted a nostalgic and vivid picture.

Narrator is the standout. Story is good but without the plot twists it would be extremely slow
Narrator is brilliant, seamlessly changing from one accent to the next. Very impressive and immersive.
The overall story was a very slow burn. I feel like I didn't get into the story until well over halfway through.
The YA ranking of the book is odd, it feels like it's trying to be more mature with the nods to violence and swearing but falls flat and sometimes feel like you're reading about young teenagers, while other times reading about grown adults, it just feels like the tone bounces around.
I liked the main character, the setting, the rough plot though slow to begin.
Because of the ending I'm excited to read the sequel, but without the last 6 or so chapters I probably wouldn't have been bothered to read book 2.

YA, well performed. Fun.
The narrator did amazing. The story was more YA than I expected, I was expecting more mature characters.

Absolutely brilliant!
I cannot recommend this book enough, although it was a bit slow to get going, once it does, it hooks you in. It has the right mix of action, suspense and a touch of romance. Set against the mysterious backdrop of 19th century Egypt and the ever compelling legend of Cleopatra.
As for the narration, I liked the main readers voice, she kept the story interesting, however I wish we could have heard more of “Whit’s”voice.

A big DNF
I wanted to love this book, the summary of it sounded perfect but alas!
I am just under five hours in and nothing has happen. Or at least nothing that couldn’t have happened in the first few chapters. I still have 11 hours left and I just can’t bring myself to finish.
The narrator does a great job with accents and diversity however the main characters voice is so slow and lacking in any interest. It’s like listening to a small child whose in a daydream.
Very sad that it wasn’t what I was hoping😩
