Summary

A former child actress best known for her starring roles in Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire, Mara Wilson has always felt a little young and out of place: as the only kid on a film set full of adults, the first daughter in a house full of boys, a Valley girl in New York and a neurotic in California, and a grown-up the world still remembers as a little girl. Tackling everything from what she learned about sex on the set of Melrose Place to discovering in adolescence that she was no longer "cute" enough for Hollywood, these essays chart her journey from accidental fame to relative (but happy) obscurity. They also illuminate universal struggles, like navigating love and loss and figuring out who you are and where you belong. Honest, insightful, and hilarious, Where Am I Now? introduces Mara Wilson as a brilliant new chronicler of the experience that is growing up young and female.

She’s 360 wonderful, and relatable

The book shows us how shes not only BEAUTIFUL but also a very smart, caring, grounded human being. At times it can be quite hard to navigate with her such strong self doubt regarding her appearance when we can actually see how beautiful she is. There seems to be resolution or a path there and I really wish Mara can get even closer to it than where she’s already gotten. The book makes you want to keep hearing more stories from her. She’s marvellous, and I’m glad she keeps creating

K - kid on set

I could not put this book down; hearing her read her stories through this audio platform was even better than I had imagined. I was rollercoastering through emotions, and wanting to hear more. 'Where Am I Now' by @MaraWilson; it's awakening my inner child. Capturing the time period, & what it's like deciphering the adult world as a child. Mara Wilson can I have my heart back please? #WhereAmINow #mustread

Where she is

I found this very soothing, not only because of her velvety deep voice, but because she walks you through her struggles gently and with humour.
She allows you to see that once kid actor now blossom into a talented storyteller 👍

Moving and inspirational book.

I grew up watching Mara Wilson on screen and, as many probably did, I assumed that she led a blessed and problem free life. This book opened my eyes to the fact that not everything is so simple and even those who appear to have everything may be living a completely different life behind closed doors. I highly recommend this book, it shows how Hollywood can turn on a child overnight and leave them feeling lost and past their prime at such a young age. Wilson shows the lengths it took her to overcome her fame and thrive in the world as an 'ordinary' adult.

A breath-taking window

I stumbled across this book only a few days before her book came out. Surprisingly, I was passing along memory lane, on Movie Nostalgia drive so Mathilda was a fair choice to revisit. After seeing a few links about Mara talking about her experiences, about her being a writer now, obviously the book would pop up. To my surprise, it was also available here at Audible and even more so, read by Mara herself. So it was a no-brainer to get it pre-ordered.

Starting into this, I have to say I am not a fan of autobiographies. The only one I've ever read was on Edgar Allan Poe. So this is still relatively new territory for me. But having Mara Wilson's voice read to me the exact words she had written is... soothing. Both in delivery and the actual voice. There's a certain peace to it, but still a kind of excitement that cannot be replicated. Had anyone else recorded this it would have lost it's own brand of magic.

I'll be frank, I forget plenty. I do not follow people's lives in the tabloids or the net. So hearing Mara's life story was refreshing, heart-breaking, exciting. But most of all, some of the experiences were eerily familiar. Her experience as a child with thoughts of Death, the effect that came of it. It resonated.

Her own letter to Mathilda was by far the strongest, most emotional chapter.

So yes. This book is definitely worth your time. It is worth listening to.

Thank you, Mara Wilson, for your time as well. You are an absolute complete bad-ass.

There's more to Mara than Miracle and Matilda.

A remarkably frank account of the life so far of a much loved child star. Listening to this made me realise what a truly brave and resilient person the author is in addition to her indisputable talent.

Overall OK

Was expecting more about here experiences working on her now most famous films and my childhood favourites but was a little disappointed when chapter after chapter she went on about random stuff. But its worth a listen and there are some behind the scene stuff about her experiences in film.

Really enjoyed this book

Listened to this in less than a week, great book and well read. I would recommend.

To the author Mara Wilson,
Being 28, I was a child when you were a child actor I loved all the films you were in. Maltida was one of my favourite films and we watch it over and over, it inspired me to read the book, my first proper book I choose to read. It was really interesting to hear your thoughts as the actor and how you grew up, it took me back to being a kid and I could relate. I never had thought about the actor behind the characters I loved, and I am sorry. Maltida inspired me as a kid her character and the way you played her made me strong and happy and hope you see your experience as similar. It was so great to her your story and now your inspiring me to write my story!
