Summary
Where's the Next Shelter? is the true story of three travelers on the Appalachian Trail, a 2,000-mile hike that stretches from Georgia to Maine, told from the perspective of Gary Sizer, a seasoned backpacker and former marine who quickly finds himself humbled by the endeavor. He teams up with Megan, a sassy college grad whose indomitable spirit eclipses her lack of experience; and Lemmy, a cartoonist from overseas whose off-kilter commentary on the wonders and frustrations of the trail keeps everyone laughing.
Sprawling through the woods and towns of the Appalachian Mountains, the trail carries the trio through real and fanciful ups and downs ranging from hilarious to perilous. Much more than an orderly account of mountaintops and meals, this book is an adventure about friends figuring things out as they go. It's about screwups and solutions, awe and inspiration.
If you long for the horizon or to sleep under the stars, then come along for the hike of a lifetime. All you have to do is take the first step.

An inspiring tale of perseverance...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely suggest this book to any friend of mine, whether they are into hiking or not! The story and characters alone can keep anyone riveted.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Green giant, Lemmy and Voldemort are the three stars of the show, with their strong bond of friendship shining through in the narration throughout the entre adventure. That's not to diminish the huge cast of amazing people they meet and travel with along the way!
My least favourite character was butt-head store keeper who told GG he was too far behind on the trail to finish in time, but that's no fault of the author ;)
What does Gary Sizer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Gary tells his story in such a way that you truly feel you are sat around the campfire listening to a thru-hikers stories from the trail, which i suppose is true minus the campfire! He gives the people he met such defined characteristics through the use of his own voice, most notably Lemmy, every time Gary speaks as him, i can't but help crack an ear-to-ear smile and my heart warms.
In some areas that required a louder volume ie. when a character is shouting (Woohoo! etc.) the performance felt a little self-conscious, but that really is nit-picking.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Much like green giant, i really didn't want his journey on the AT to end. It was such an inspiring, heartwarming experience, i felt like i really grew to know the people, the places, and of course, the Trail.
Any additional comments?
Although i'm an absolute novice when it comes to hiking, this book has inspired me to Climb Ben Nevis, the highest peak in UK. It's no mount Katahdin, and the one day hike i'm doing after it is not AT, but it's a start ;)

inspirational story; I wish I was hiking!
Excellent book that paints a vivid picture of a place I want to visit. I'd love to hike a meaningful distance, but haven't had the opportunity; but as Gary says at the end, just preserve and do it.
