About this listen
Inspired by the McMartin preschool trials and the Satanic Panic of the ’80s, the critically acclaimed author of The Remaking delivers another pulse-pounding, true-crime-based horror novel.
Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son, Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday - but Sean does....
Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother. Like most mothers of the 1980s, she’s worried about bills, childcare, putting food on the table...and an encroaching threat to American life that can take the face of anyone: a politician, a friendly neighbor, or even a teacher. When Sean’s school sends a letter to the parents revealing that Sean’s favorite teacher is under investigation, a white lie from Sean lights a fire that engulfs the entire nation - and Sean and his mother are left holding the match.
Now, 30 years later, someone is here to remind Richard that they remember what Sean did. And though Sean doesn’t exist anymore, someone needs to pay the price for his lies.

This left me feeling a lot of things; sympathy and anger towards the 'victim'. I still don't know how I feel about him and the lies he told and the lives he destroyed.
Very interesting read

1. The front page cover is misleading ( which I guess is my own fault and my interpretation) was expecting it to be a supernatural story and it wasn’t. Or if it did. It was very limited.
2. It must be really hard writing from the point of view of a five year old or for any child of a young age. After working with children for years they just don’t think the way the author wrote that they do. But again some of the story was from their point of view so I could see how the author would have to embellish a bit to get the story across.
I always say if a writer can get you to hate and have a character grate on u then they have written the book well. And the child psychologist in this did that. So much I had to switch off calm down and stop shouting at my phone.
I did enjoy this book. I liked how it went back and forth between the older and younger person. It was well written and I didn’t get the twist so that’s a bonus. If u are after an easy read then this will suit u. Though it does contain a small amount of implied child abuse. So if u don’t like a book with that in it. I wouldn’t choose this one.
A good book.
