About this listen

'Will's mother's hokey homily, Waste not, want not... hisses in his ears as he oscillates furiously on the spot, havering on the threshold between the bedroom and the dying one...all the while cradling the plastic leech of the syringe in the crook of his arm. Oscillating furiously, and, as he'd presses the plunger home a touch more...and more, he hears it again and again: Waaaste nooot, waaant nooot! whooshing into and out of him, while the blackness wells up at the periphery of his vision, and his hackneyed heart begins to beat out weirdly arrhythmic drum fills - even hitting the occasional rim-shot on his resonating rib cage. He waits, paralysed, acutely conscious, that were he simply to press his thumb right home, it'll be a cartoonish death: That's all folks! as the aperture screws shut forever. '

Will Self is the author of many novels and books of nonfiction, including Great Apes, The Book of Dave, How the Dead Live, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel of the Year 2002, The Butt, winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction 2008, Umbrella, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2012, and Shark. His most recent novel, Phone, was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize. He lives in south London.

A smackeroo of a listen

Will Self reads all his own books with bombshell energy and this autobiographical tale of childhood and university years + travel gaps all weaved onto a continuous edge of calamity is no different. ‘Tis all about highs and lows of an urban middle class upbringing adumbrated with drugs, lots of drugs, lots of sex - this was the eighties; Thatcher looms large in a central section as Self typifies the utter utter disbelief at her rise as leaderene. Brilliant, allusive, informative he’s mainlined the eighties to you’re lugholes in one gigantic whoosh - stand back - stand up and be decimated!

great insights,

great insights, deeply and equally moving and disturbing, nobody makes dark as funny as Will Self - Will is also the only voice for reading Self...I wish he'd read others books just for the sound of barely contained contempt it would produce.

An absorbing listen

A fascinating journey through the life of the young Will Self, made all the better by the Self narration. Didn’t want it to end…

Just say yes

One gripe, which is, you cannot go to prison for driving without due care and attention (unless you kill someone). But apart from that I thought this was grimly funny, brilliant writing. Parts were so good I repeated them. Also put me right off taking up heroin and have decided to stick to cream cakes for now.

Excellent narration, the best junkie book in ages

Loved the story of the author’s adolescence, his dark humour. Listened again and again. Can’t recommend enough.
