Summary
A new excitement comes to the village of Thrush Green when Harold Shoosmith, a distinguished bachelor who has chosen the village for his retirement, takes the corner house on the green. Harold is soon enmeshed in village politics and becomes involved in the private lives of his neighbours as well. His presence has a dramatic effect on Dimity Dean and Ella Bembridge and is the cause of a serious misunderstanding between the two friends.
And the village’s widowed rector finds in Harold a new friend who gives him the courage to end his lonely state.

Escape
This is a listen to escape from the troubles of lockdown life and immerse yourself in a gentler life of Thrush Green.
It is a long time since I read these books, but it is a treat to return to them again. The narrator is very good too.

Lovely gentle story, well read
I'd like to flag that this is the unabridged version of this book. I mistakenly used one of my credits on the abridged version - had begun listening when I realised and was glad that Audible let me return it without any fuss, so I could purchase this unabridged version.

Winter in Thrush Green, perfect listening
I love Miss Read and have done since I read my mother’s copies. This winter has seen snow and cold rain, so evenings by the fire, listening to June Barrie narrate have been blissful.

Excellent book
Yet again a lovely simple story from Thrush Green when life can be troublesome to drift into these books is like a breath of fresh air. Also beautifully read by June Barrie she does the voices so well.

Enchanting, beautiful, poetic - simply flawless!
I haven't read any of the Thrush Green or Fairacre novels before. I vaguely remember dismissing them as "surely boring" as a teenager. How stupid was I! It took another twenty years for me to finally give Miss Read a chance.
I chanced upon 'Winter in Thrush Green' in an Audible sale and bought it for £3 months ago. Now, happily enjoying the anticipation of Christmas and loving the freezing, misty days here, I thought the book's title sounded promising. My craving for winter- and Christmas-themed reading has been satisfied in excess. And I absolutely fell in love with Thrush Green and its people!
The writing is so beautiful and gentle, yet witty - even acerbic at times. Even the most mundane moments are described in such a beautiful and fascinating way that you simply can't stop listening.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series and then dive into the Fairacre novels. I am in awe. Discovering Miss Read feels like an early Christmas present!
