 著者の中野孝次が47歳のとき、横浜の洋光台に家を建てて、都内から移り住んだ際、義妹からお祝いにともらったのが柴犬のハラスだった。最初は運動不足解消のための散歩用という軽い気持ちだったのだが、その愛らしさに、子どものいない夫妻の生活はハラスを中心に回るようになっていった。ともに過ごした13年の間に大事件が起こる。志賀高原のスキー場に行ったとき、行き違いからハラスが行方不明になってしまった必死に捜索する4日間の夫妻の深い困惑と苦悩は読者の胸を打つ。その後の近所の紀州犬に腹を噛まれて重傷を負った話や、悪性腫瘍にかかって衰弱していきやがて死を迎えるまでの記録も、ハラスとの深い心の絆を感じさせる。 中野は、「私の半生において、愛という感情をこれほどまでに無拘束に全面的に注いだ相手はいない」とまで書き、庭に作った墓の前では、「私たちの40代から50代にかけての13年間がここに葬られた」と呟く。(C)wis（C） 2013 wis
