About this listen

Kelvin Wiltshire lives the life of a simple cook in a remote village on the far side of Trendham.

The townsfolk think little of the man and his son and believe him to be just another refugee from the Terabinian war. On cold winter nights, they share rumors of the bloody conflict and the mysterious death of Will Cartwright, the mighty mage who had the power to command storms.

They like the new cook. They fear the fallen king. But the two men are one and the same.

Haunted by nightmares from his past, Will has chosen a life of exile, hoping to erase the blood from his soul by forging a simple life. Service and family might ease his pain, but beneath his scars are deeper wounds: a queen and wife turned into a lich, friends poisoned with hate. While he seeks peace in isolation, his absence has left a void, and an ancient foe craves a return to power.

Patient and malevolent, the enemy knows the nature of man, and anger is an oh-so-useful tool in the game of nations. As war looms, Will’s anonymity—and the life he’s built—are threatened, forcing him to choose between the friends of his past and the friends of his present. To win, he’ll need what he left behind: the mantle of the Stormking.

Critic reviews

"In a realm meticulously populated with trolls, elves, dragons, and mages, Reynolds is at his best giving lively voices to nosy aunts, curious cousins, and a brother-in-law with a heart of gold." —AudioFile Magazine

Redemption

The last book was bad yes but this has breathed new life into this world of wonder and saved the character of many of the folks the book follows , would recommend to those who read the last and to new people

An enjoyable listen, overall.

Like others, I was disappointed in the ending of the previous series and this book does somewhat tidy that up a bit. I also agree with some others who have noted there is considerably more sexual content in this book - and the language is definitely stronger. I'm not sure either of those things are an improvement. Oil deciding he's gay seems to have come about without any warning and was over and done with in a few paragraphs. Whilst I'm not suggesting this should be the main focus, it did rather feel like it was pushed in as an afterthought.

However, all in all, I enjoyed the book and will continue with the saga in due course.

Thank god for this book

After the brutal ending of the previous title in the series I was left hollow and kind of shook up for a few days, it was so depressing and heartbreaking, all the main characters were left in a really dark place, this one actually brings hope back to pretty much all the characters, so happy the author decided to carry on the story, can’t wait to see what happens next

Excellent new beginning

I was keen to get my hands on this after the end of the last series and am not disappointed with how this book turned out. Michael’s sense of humour continues to make me chuckle. I’m ready for the next one. Tim does a superb job reading this and I’m immensely relieved he came back for this series. Bring on book two.

very hard to review this after the last book

I can't tell if it's the best of the series or just my relief at the recovery from the travesty of the previous novel. Like many of the other reviewers I was not going to buy this having been blindsided by the authors sabotage of what had been an amazing fantasy series to date in the previous book.

In retrospect the author should have either released them closer together or included some of the current in the previous book ( or sacked his editor ).

Part of what makes this series so great is Tim's narration, easily the best narrator out there and this series along with red rising are his stand out performances.

What a book!

This had everything. So much story, excellent pacing and was honestly the best book I’ve read in a long time. The serious themes and situations mixed in with dark humour was brilliant. Narration, as to be expected from Tim was great.

(Spoiler) Looking forward to seeing how the series develops with the a conflict with elves seeming inevitable. Great job from the author
