About this listen

Eagerly awaited by many counsellors and psychotherapists, this new edition includes an updated preface, new content on recent research and new developments and debates around relational depth, and new case studies.

This groundbreaking text goes to the very heart of the therapeutic meeting between therapist and client. Focusing on the concept of "relational depth", the authors describe a form of encounter in which therapist and client experience profound feelings of contact and engagement with each other, and in which the client has an opportunity to explore whatever is experienced as most fundamental to her or his existence. The book has helped thousands of trainees and practitioners understand how to facilitate a relationally deep encounter, identify the personal "blocks" that may be encountered along the way, and consider new therapeutic concepts - such as "holistic listening" - that help them to meet their clients at this level.

This classic text remains a source of fresh thinking and stimulating ideas about the therapeutic encounter which is relevant to trainees and practitioners of all orientations.

It’s hard going at some points simply because of the nature of the book (in terms of its academic nature).
I struggled with the thick Scottish accent of the narrator - although he does speak slowly and clearly, I found it difficult to concentrate at times - this is more my thing being very southern and not used to this accent.

Very informative and important learning

I’m not a big reader! At first I found it hard to understand due to all the referencing! But I kept with it & it has really helped me understand the subject in depth

Listen to the audio book a second time to help it all sink in, you get used to the accent after a while

Great book

When I first started listening I wondered if I could become engrossed in the book as it is read rather slowly and softly, however after listening to a chapter or two I really enjoyed that and found it helped to absorb the information being offered.

As a trainee therapist I found this book useful to listen to and easy to listen and would recommend to anyone else who is also training.

A book full of insightful scenarios from an experienced psychotherapist

The only draw back is that their is no PDF file to accompany this book.

Excellent Book

This book is superb, and should be required reading (or listening) for therapists. But the narration is irritating - although it is well-paced and sounds ‘energetic’, it’s really not an easy listen - despite my enthusiasm for the work, I keep drifting off. I think it’s because I’m not convinced the narrator really gets what he’s saying. There are also a few words that he pronounces in multiple ways, or gets completely wrong - I know ‘phenomenological’ is a pig, but still…and pronouncing ‘et al’ as though it was French is like nails on a blackboard.

I also agree with another reviewer - the spoken refs are disruptive. There has to be a better way!

Moan over - the content itself is just brilliant.

Excellent book, slightly annoying narration

This audiobook us packed full of very useful information. However, it is somewhat spoiled and difficult to listen to as the reader reafs out every reference and web address as well as certain punctuation like underscores. The reference information could easily be added in the accompanying notes. somewhat spoiled the enjoyment of listening for me.
